The 37-year-old carded four birdies in a row from the 13th to reach the turn in 32 and picked up four more shots in the first five holes on the front nine before holing his second shot to the sixth for an eagle two. T24 here past year and T10 in 2015.

"It's going to turn into a birdie-fest like it always does, because the course is in great shape", 2007 victor Brandt Snedeker said Wednesday. "Obviously I'd like to be in a slightly different position ideally, but still have a good chance", said Conners, who spent last week at home visiting friends and enjoying a rare week off.

"Unfortunately I left myself one of the hardest four-footers you can have, a downhill right-to-lefter and I didn't hit a great putt".

The 59 broke the course and tournament record of 60 set in 2016 by South Korea's Kim Si-woo.

Snedeker's 59 started off innocently enough.

Other 59s were fired by Al Geiberger in 1977, Chip Beck in 1991, David Duval in 1999, Paul Goydos in 2010, Australian Stuart Appleby in 2010, Furyk in 2013 and Justin Thomas in 2017.

After that shot, Snedeker said a 59 felt like a real possibility. A field of 68 players, inclusive of eight local sponsor exemptions, will compete for a purse of US$2.5 million.
