Mueller inquiry: White House lawyer McGahn co-operating with probe

Washington DC. U.S. President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh to succeed retiring Supreme Court A

As White House counsel since the beginning of the Trump administration, McGahn could have rare insight into the president's thinking. He stated that he "allowed" McGahn and "all others" to testify, and that he "didn't have to".

According to The New York Times, McGahn became increasingly concerned about Trump's encouragement of his interviews with the special counsel, and feared Trump was setting him up to take the fall for possible illegal acts.

However, McGahn's lawyer gave only a small amount of information about what was said to Mueller.

Trump's personal legal team has urged the special counsel to wrap up its investigations by the time of the mid-term elections this fall, and Trump has maintained his innocence through the duration of the inquiry, calling the Mueller investigation a "witch hunt".

Giuliani says it's "silly" to say Trump should testify "because he's going to tell the truth and he shouldn't worry" because "it's somebody's version of the truth".

US President Donald Trump went on the offensive on Sunday, invoking the spectres of Richard Nixon and Joseph McCarthy, starkly polarising figures from American history, in a frenzied attack on The New York Times.

The Times reported that McGahn had provided "detailed accounts" about episodes relating to whether Trump sought to obstruct justice, citing a dozen current and former officials and other sources.

He has voluntarily given about 30 hours of interviews to the Mueller team spread across at least three sessions since December, offering information including Trump's directions for how McGahn should respond to Mueller's moves.

He added in response to Mr Trump's tweets that he doubts the president has "ANY IDEA what McGahn has told Mueller".

The newspaper said Mr. McGahn was also centrally involved in Mr. Trump's attempts to fire the special counsel, Robert Mueller, which investigators might not have discovered without him. "I don't think it is a reach to have that in your consciousness".

"The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel [sic] Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel [sic], he must be a John Dean type 'RAT, '" Trump tweeted.

Mr Trump on Sunday continued to rail against the Mueller investigation, which he has labelled a "witch hunt". In addition to calling the probe a "witch hunt", Trump now compares the probe to "McCarthyism:" Joseph McCarthy's series of mid-century hearings created to root out Communists in the government, business, and entertainment industries. Mr Trump tweeted, referencing the indiscriminate and damaging allegations made by senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s to expose communists.

Trump emphasized that he authorized his aides to cooperate with Mueller.

Mueller had requested to speak with McGahn about the circumstances surrounding former FBI Director James Comey's firing and his reported involvement in the event surrounding Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation, the sources said.
