Trump Tries to Deny His Crime With Cohen, Confesses by Mistake

President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen appears in front of members of the media after a closed door meeting with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington

But what he described is in line with the stories of former Playboy model Karen McDougal and adult film star Stormy Daniels.

But Cohen's cooperation with investigators may yet pose an untold threat.

"The difference between a campaign finance violation that is a crime and a campaign finance violation is a civil matter is whether the action was taking knowingly and willfully", explained Paul S. Ryan, the Vice President of Policy & Litigation at Common Cause, the non-partisan organization that filed complaints with the Department of Justice and the Federal Election Commission earlier this year regarding these payments.

And as CBS News has previously reported, Cohen has indicated he is willing to tell special counsel Robert Mueller that Mr. Trump was aware of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting before it took place, although he has shown no evidence to support this claim. "I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family", the president said. Trump did not mention Manafort or Cohen during the rally, complaining only briefly about the "witch hunt", his favored term for Mueller's investigation into Russian interference.

Micheal Avenatti, Daniels' lawyer and now Democrat presidential hopeful, announced via Twitter that he hopes to see President Trump forced to testify under oath about the payment to Daniels soon.

Writing on the Lawfare blog, former White House counsel Bob Bauer argued that the Cohen campaign-finance plea will resonate "unmistakably" with Mueller's investigation, "which also concerns what a candidate is prepared to do to win an election and then cover his tracks".

In effect, Trump appeared to brush off developments that several of his aides and confidants said amounted to one of the worst days of his presidency.

Trump's former lawyer is on a fast track to being disbarred in NY following his guilty plea Tuesday on 8 federal counts, including tax evasion and campaign law violations. according to a source familiar with the process.

The president went on: "Michael Cohen plead guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations that are not a crime".

In his guilty plea, Cohen directly implicated the President, saying that he kept information that would have harmed Trump from becoming public during the 2016 election cycle "in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office". But Cohen said Tuesday that Trump repaid him the money for the objective of influencing the campaign. However, press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to answer all of the questions, including whether other women received similar payments from Trump. Manafort received loans from the Federal Savings Bank after one of its executives sought a position in the Trump campaign and administration, according to prosecutors.

Cohen now faces potential jail time and could yet decide to throw open the window on decades of dealings with his former mentor Trump in return for a lenient sentence. "They didn't come out of the campaign; they came from me", Trump said.

Trump attacked Cohen, tweeting, "If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don't retain the services of Michael Cohen!".

On Wednesday, the White House said Mr Trump was "not concerned at all" by Cohen co-operating with FBI investigators.

"I'm not going to get into the back-and-forth details", Sanders said.

Prosecutors had been investigating Mr Cohen for possible fraud related to his businesses for months.
