Breach exposed details of 2 million T-Mobile US customers

T-Mobile says hackers may have stolen 2 million users' personal data

To help protect their cellular accounts, Guido says consumers should add a different type of protection that's offered by all of the major carriers, including T-Mobile.

No financial data was stolen in the incident, the company said, but some personal details such as customer names, email addresses, phone numbers and account numbers may have been compromised. The breach was discovered on August 20 by T-Mobile's cyber-security team and shut down, but not before the damage was done.

According to a report by Vice's tech news offshoot, Motherboard, around two million customers - 3 per cent of T-Mobile US's subscribers - were affected by the breach.

The spokesperson told Motherboard that hackers from an worldwide group accessed company servers using an API.

Impacted customers will receive an SMS, letter in the mail, or a phone call to notify them.

T-Mobile didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. If you are a T-Mobile customer, you can dial 611, use two-way messaging on MyT-Mobile.com, the T-Mobile App, or iMessage through Apple Business Chat. That translates to roughly 2 million customers. "We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused". No financial information was exposed in the breach.

Attackers having your address and account numbers may not sound like a big deal, but information like this is useful for social engineering attacks, where a scammer will call customer service pretending to be you.
