Aussie PM Scott Morrison invites Donald Trump to Australia

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's grip on power looks increasingly precarious amid infighting in the Liberal Party

New Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Saturday he had spoken with President Donald Trump and been congratulated by the USA leader, who got off to a famously rocky start with former premier Malcolm Turnbull.

During a three-way vote, whoever comes last in the first round will be eliminated with a second round taking place to decide who becomes leader.

"It has been such a privilege to be the leader of this great nation", Turnbull said. "I'm getting on with my job of delivering good government for the people of Australia, and supporting the Turnbull government in doing that".

It's the fourth time since 2010 that a prime minister has been voted out of the job by his or her own party.

New Prime Minister Scott Morrison has begun announcing his new cabinet, with the full ministry expected to be revealed over the weekend.

Morrison told reporters: "We intend to be governing.so I don't think anybody should be making any plans for any elections any time soon".

Mr Morrison is a former Tourism Australia managing director who has held ministerial portfolios including immigration and social services.

The Associated Press reports that the "revolving door" of prime ministers is "universally hated by Australians".

With such high turnover, the Australian population has received a considerable amount of whiplash in terms of who the head of their government is.

Turnbull said that if that happens, he will not stand as a leadership candidate and will leave parliament, sparking a by-election which could be problematic for the government which has a wafer-thin one-seat parliamentary majority.

"There was a determined insurgency from a number of people", Turnbull said.

Aged Care and Indigenous Health Minister Ken Wyatt, whose personal popularity is key to the Government holding its most marginal WA seat of Hasluck, would have reconsidered his position if Mr Dutton became prime minister, because he boycotted the 2008 apology to the Stolen Generation.

"The Australia of the future has to be a nation that is agile, that is innovative, that is creative. I'm sorry. You deserve better than numerous things our Federal Parliament has served up to you for the past 10 years", wrote Nationals MP Darren Chester, whose party is in coalition with the Liberals.

"Do you know where Australia is?" one Twitter user wrote back to Trump.

Australian shares are down more than 1.5% since the first leadership challenge this week.

The ease to oust a party leader has led to leader turnaround due to negative opinion polls, where fear of losing power in an upcoming election can lead to the leader being replaced in an attempt to swing the upcoming election, which occurs every three years.

On social issues, Morrison has stood to the right of the more moderate Turnbull, and opposed the legalisation of same-sex marriage a year ago.
