Grassley Urges Trump to Not Let White House Lawyer Go

Trump lawyer McGahn, Mueller cooperator, may leave White House

Mr McGahn, one of President Trump's earliest appointments to the White House, voluntarily cooperated with special counsel Robert Mueller and his team.

He has met extensively with special counsel Robert Mueller's team in its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and is an important potential witness regarding whether Trump obstructed justice when he fired FBI director James Comey.

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, confirmed his departure in a tweet on Wednesday.

Being the lead attorney in the Trump White House is roughly equivalent to my stress level when one of my kids is the first performer at a piano recital.

McGahn was already reported to have extensively cooperated with the special counsel Robert Mueller in a way that could have incriminated Trump in the investigation into whether he obstructed justice in connection to the Russian Federation investigation.

McGahn, who joined Trump's administration in January 2017, was reportedly interested in leaving his position and expressed interest that he be succeeded by D.C. lawyer Emmet Flood, Axios reported on Wednesday.

His replacement is likely to be Emmett Flood, an attorney who worked with Bill Clinton to rebut impeachment proceedings.

A person close to Mr McGahn told USA newspaper the Washington Post that he was planning to leave in the autumn. "But there's not a plan locked in place at this point".

McGahn could not be reached for comment.

"I hope it's not true McGahn is leaving WhiteHouse Counsel".

George Hartmann, spokesman for the committee, said Grassley viewed McGahn as the lynchpin to Trump's push to fill judicial vacancies. Before taking the White House post, he was working as a partner at the Jones Day law firm in Washington on issues of political law.

Mr McGahn's departure was widely expected.

Trump, who has repeatedly called the probe a "rigged witch hunt", said he had authorised his team to "fully cooperate" with investigators and provided hundreds of thousands of pages of documents.

He was not aware that Trump planned to send the tweet before it posted, according to a person close to McGahn who was not authorised to speak publicly.

"He was surprised", this person said. Flynn was forced to resign after reports revealed Yates' warning to McGahn about Flynn's conduct. Flynn pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The conversations have unnerved Trump, who didn't know the full extent of McGahn's discussions, two people familiar with his thinking have said. He was one of the first establishment Republicans to work with Trump, joining the NY businessman as counsel to his campaign.
