Trump Nixed a Planned White House Statement Commemorating John McCain

Plans take shape for the funeral services for US Republican Senator John McCain. Two presidents are expected at services

US President Donald Trump and Senator John McCain had a long-running feud.

Top Democrat Chuck Schumer and top Republican Mitch McConnell said flags on all government buildings should be at half-staff for the late senator.

Although the White House flags were briefly lowered on Saturday night, by Monday they returned to full staff.

Marc Short, Trump's former legislative director, said the president faced "a little bit of a situation of a Catch 22" when deciding how to respond to McCain's death.

"John McCain stood up for principal and was not partisan".

Tributes also came in from world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron.

At the press conference Monday, Davis also read a final letter from McCain that expressed the late senator's deep gratitude and love of country, and offered words of wisdom to his fellow Americans.

McCain, who's remembered by most as an American hero, will be laid to rest at the U.S. Naval Academy's cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland on Sunday.

The White House had prepared a full statement, as is customary. Various services are planned to honor the senator, who died on Saturday at 81 of brain cancer, throughout the week.

The most recent presidential proclamation Trump made that lowered United States flags to half-staff was for the victims of the shooting at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, in June. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a family spokesman said, The Washington Post reported Monday.

However, this time around, Trump did not make any presidential proclamation around the flags.

At the same time, Doug Ducey published the statement according to which he intends to call the name only when the events in memory of John McCain will end.

The American flag at the White House was lowered to half-staff on Sunday.

Back in 2015, Trump famously said that McCain was not a "war hero" because he was captured during the Vietnam War.

However, others have noted that there is a code for flags flying at half-staff for the death of members of Congress. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are expected to speak at the service.

"I've tried to serve our country honorably", McCain wrote.
