US Open at a glance -- day 3

US Open Camila Giorgi Venus Williams top off Alize Cornet

The two former world No 1s will meet for the 30th time in their illustrious careers after the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena won 6-2 6-2 in the opening match of the night session on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Hours earlier, across the way at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Venus Williams did her part with another straight-set victory, eliminating 40th-ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy, 6-4, 7-5.

The last time the two sisters met at a Grand Slam was in the 2017 Australian Open final, where Serena prevailed in straight sets.

The 2000 and 2001 champion in NY will face Serena for a place in the last 16 if the six-time victor gets past Germany's Carina Witthoeft under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights later in the day.

Venus emerged a 6-2, 6-4 victor, something her sister admitted she barely remembers, but Serena also revealed she reckons their individual success helps them both reach higher levels.

"I guess I had a little advantage but it's going to be hard for me on Friday", said 36-year-old Serena.

"It's a tough match to have so early in the tournament".

"The players were supporting me and telling me that if I get fined, we would all be together and make a revolution and stuff". It's not the end of the world. "I think they have always played really good matches and super competitive". "Whatever, it will work".

Serena wore this Virgil Abloh tutu during the first round of the US Open on Monday - just days after Bernard Giudicelli's interview made headlines.

"I was happy with a lot of things".

In other action, Sloane Stephens made it through after being taken to three sets by Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, the defending champion eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

"I think it's very fair from them to apologise to me".

However, ninth seeded Julia Goerges, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, slumped to a 7-6 (12/10), 6-3 defeat to Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation.

Ukraine seventh seed Elina Svitolina was also an early victor on Wednesday, cruising past Tatjana Maria 6-2, 6-3 to avenge a first round defeat at the hands of the German player at Wimbledon last month.
