Former preisdent Bill Clinton memorialized Aretha Franklin as a woman with "breathtaking talent" who kept on charming audiences despite her illness.

Rather than simply being a show piece, the two-door auto that transported Aretha's body was also the same vehicle used in the funeral of her late father Rev. C.L. Franklin.

"Come on, this is a church service, lift your voice!"

Ellis III may need to be pop cultured. Before the golden casket was closed, Franklin's body could be seen dressed in gold sequins.

The church's choir sang Franklin's "Say a Little Prayer" and her version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" as mourners arrived.

At the end of his eulogy - in classic dad fashion - Clinton played an Aretha Franklin classic.

Mr Sharpton took to the pulpit to call her the soundtrack of the movement, with songs such as her signature 1967 hit "Respect".

Singing a Franklin classic in front of the late icon's family and friends was no doubt a daunting task, but Grande handled it with grace, keeping her usual verbal gymnastics in check to deliver a attractive, faithful rendition.

"#ArianaGrande don't know the below the knee rule for the pulpit in the black church". During her career, Franklin won 18 Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award in 1994, and was also the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "That's the best way that I can put it".

Numerous tributes were musical. "You're so special", he said, before crooning a few lines from his song "Really Gonna Miss You". "This is as close you get to royalty here in America and Aretha earned every bit of it", said Missy Settlers, 53, an automotive parts assembler.

The singer died at her home in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 76 after suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer.

This is a real life that has been lived, that a person regardless of how famous she became no matter how many people she touched around the world, she still could not escape death.

Mayor Mike Duggan announced during the service Friday that the city would rename the riverfront amphitheatre Chene Park to "Aretha Franklin Park".

Many high-profile figures did attend Franklin's funeral, including musicians Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, and Hillary and Bill Clinton.
