Tottenham's Son secures military exemption after Korea win Asiad gold

Son Heung-min military duty

Tottenham fans can will breathe a little easier after Son Heung-min avoided two years of national service when leading South Korea's U23 side to the Asian Games gold medal.

South Korea could have been three goals up by half-time, however, with Lee Jin-hyun blazing just over from distance and Son bundled over in the box for what replays suggested was a clear penalty.

South Korean law requires all able-bodied men to complete nearly two years of service in the nation's army, navy or air force.

The victory for Son and his teammates added to the Korean medal tally, bringing it to 49 golds at the games, the third highest total for this edition of the tournament, after Japan and table-topping China.

"I want to say that my teammates have been incredible".

The final itself was a tight affair and it was decided in extra-time following a goalless 90 minutes of football.

In the 101st minute, Hawang Hee Chan headed home Son's corner to make it 2-0.

And as you might expect, the win went down especially well with Spurs fans who were dreading losing the dynamic player who has become such a favourite in recent years.

"Tottenham have supported me so much and that means a lot to me", he said.

Son Heung-min thanked Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino for supporting him during South Korea's triumphant Asian Games campaign.

South Korea beat neighbours North Korea to take gold in 2014 but Son was not in the squad as his club at the time - Bayer Leverkusen - exercised their right to refuse his release.

Defeat for South Korea would have seen Son - who turned 26 last month - lose another of a dwindling number of chances to avoid military service before the age of 28.
