Lionel Messi finally breaks silence on Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Juventus

FIFA Best Awards Messi snubbed Ronaldo Modric and Salah nominated

Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi, a five-time Ballon d'Or victor, missed out on a place in the top three.

Cristiano Ronaldo could claim a record sixth Federation Internationale de Football Association men's player of the year prize after Lionel Messi was omitted from the shortlist for the first time since 2006.

Barca star Lionel Messi has now spoken out about Ronaldo's departure for the first time since the move.

Juventus head coach Massimo Allegri says he won't be afraid to bench club-record signing Cristiano Ronaldo over the course of the season.

The winners will be crowned on September 24 in London after votes are collected from players, coaches, journalists and supporters.

Midfielder Modric, also part of Real's Champions League triumph, finished runner-up with Croatia at the World Cup, winning the best player award at the tournament in Russian Federation.

His competitors, Ronaldo and Modric, won the Champions league together with Real Madrid.

Modric helped Croatia to the World Cup final, won by France, while Salah's goals propelled Liverpool to the Champions League final.

And even when he did win, he did so purely on the merit of leading Real Madrid to the Champions League title.

Federation Internationale de Football Association have closed an investigation into Inter Milan and their pursuit of Luka Modric this summer since they say there are no grounds to continue.

"He's this quiet guy we know from Real Madrid, but when we saw him in the World Cup he became a majestic leader".

France's World Cup winning captain Hugo Lloris is in contention for the goalkeeper of the year award, alongside Golden Glove victor Thibaut Courtois and Danish shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel.

Wales forward Gareth Bale's acrobatic effort for Real in the Champions League final is another on the list.

But his wonderful World Cup goal for Argentina against Nigeria in St Petersburg grants the Barcelona superstar his sixth nomination for a prize he is yet to win.

Reynold Pedros of Lyon, Japan boss Asako Takakura and Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman are in the running for best women's coach.
