Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds dies from heart attack aged 82

Burt Reynolds dies at the age of 82

Still, Reynolds had plenty other roles in which he could revel in - the MI native was the top-grossing movie star in Hollywood for each year from 1978 to 1982.

These roles earned Reynolds' fame and box office mojo, all while he gained the reputation as a ladies man connected with some of Hollywood's most eligible actresses.

Burt Reynolds, the popular star of films such as "Deliverance", "The Longest Yard" and "Smokey and the Bandit", has died at 82.

And somehow, he kept coming back - most famously, perhaps, in the 1997 award victor Boogie Nights, where he played a porn director who had dreams of making movies that were more than (just) porn. Reynolds said he considered the Oscar-nominated film, which co-starred Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox, the best of his career. He had a promising future with the program, but he suffered a knee injury in the Seminoles' first game of his sophomore season, then later that year suffered another knee injury and lost his spleen as a result of a vehicle accident.

When injuries derailed his promising athletic career, Reynolds turned to acting. He moved to NY and landed minor stage and TV roles before making his film debut in 1961. "We never really made up". He chose Palm Beach as the setting for his short-lived ABC series "B.L. Stryker" (1989-90), on which he also served as executive producer.

Reynolds' assured performance in the controversial and violent "Deliverance" started him on a decade or more of enormous success.

A year later, Anderson released her version of events in a tell-all book called "My Life in High Heels".

Comeback attempts in movies including Switching Channels, Cop and a Half, The Man From Left Field (which he also directed) and Striptease were failures.

While his popularity waned relatively, Reynolds continued to score movie and TV roles into the 1990s. But he had a comeback of sorts with 1997's Boogie Nights, for which he earned a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.

By 1974, Reynolds had hit it big and starred as an ex-football player who landed in prison in the film "The Longest Yard". His TV work also included spots on Ed, Burn Notice and Archer.

In September 2015 Reynolds was honored by the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures with the organization's Richard "Diamond" Farnsworth Award.

Well known for his many romances, Reynolds' tempestuous relationship with his ex-wife Loni Anderson was key tabloid fodder in the 1980s and the divorce left him millions in debt just when his film career faltered.
