Obama blasts Trump and Republicans, urges Democrats to vote

Former President Obama to Hit Campaign Trail in Illinois

The White House's push for lighter regulation and the tax bill was seen as critical to a pro-growth environment.

The former president made it very clear how important it is for Americans to go vote in the midterms.

Obama was speaking Friday at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign, where he accepted an ethics in government award.

Obama is also expected to campaign in IL and Pennsylvania later this month and headline a fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee in New York City, which is looking to reverse gerrymandering that has helped Republicans in some congressional districts.

It's the first time 44's publicly attacked 45 since leaving office and, honestly, it's the kind of talk Democrats have been dying to hear from Obama.

"I want every single one of you to host events in your community to get registered and to get them fired up", she said in a conference call with organizers Wednesday, when she announced events she would attend later this month in Las Vegas and Miami.

"They're undermining our alliances, cosying up to Russian Federation".

Obama's remarks will be on "the state of our democracy", his communications director Katie Hill said in a statement. How hard can it be to say that Nazis are bad?'

Mr Obama also jabbed Mr Trump on the issue the current president frequently heralds as one of his greatest achievements: the strong economy.

Trump meanwhile said he fell asleep during the former president's speech, and said Democrats would have caused a negative GDP growth.

The ex-president has kept a low profile since he left office in 2017 until now.

"On Friday, President Obama will offer new thoughts on this moment and what it requires from the American people".

"I'm asking you to be neither blind to, nor dismayed by, reality - but motivated by it", Obama wrote in an email Thursday to supporters of Organizing for America, a grass roots organization he founded. This has reportedly annoyed some Democrats, who believe their most potent weapon is sitting out the midterms in an effort to maintain decorum that they feel has gone out the window since Trump took office.

On the campaign trail for Democrats, former President Obama seized on Republican celebration of the announcement Friday of 261,000 jobs added in August, contending the economic turnaround began under his administration. He said the biggest threat to democracy isn't Trump but "indifference".

The former president also criticized the claims of an anonymous New York Times op-ed, which said many staffers are "working diligently from within" to keep Trump from enacting damaging policies.

Comedian Kathy Griffin summed up the celebrity sentiment over Obama's speech succinctly, saying, "I love him".

Obama is hitting the campaign trail for his fellow Democrats, with an event in California for House candidates and then a stop in OH next week.
