Meanwhile human resources executive Gabrielle Toledano is not planning to return to the company from her leave, accodring to various published reports.

And the electric-car maker has been no stranger to controversy this summer: Musk came under fire in early August when he unexpectedly sent out a tweet saying he was considering taking Tesla private, and had the "funding secured". Meanwhile Musk somehow can't stop accusing one of the cave divers who rescued those trapped children in Thailand of being a pedophile.

The drop followed not only Mr. Musk's interview, but also Chief Accounting Officer Dave Morton's resignation that was announced this week.

Musk smoked marijuana with comedian Joe Rogan at the end of a two-and-half-hour interview on the "The Joe Rogan Experience", which featured a wide-ranging discussion on topics including artificial intelligence, the Tesla chief executive's technological ambitions and personal hardship.

Morton, who is walking away from a $350,000 base salary and a $10 million new-hire stock grant that would vest over four years, said he believes "strongly" in Tesla and that he had no disagreements with the company's leadership or its financial reporting. After considering it for about 3-4 seconds, Elon Musk says "I mean it's legal, right?" and takes it for a little puff himself.

Joe Rogan Experience/YouTubeElon Musk smokes weed on the "Joe Rogan Experience". A podcast appearance Thursday night featuring whiskey, a joint and a Samurai sword was only the latest example of Musk's eccentric behavior.

Shares fell over 10% in early USA trade. Musk spent more than 2 1/2 hours talking to Rogan, a comic and martial-arts color commentator.

How the company fares in the debt market is important because it faces looming cash needs and has shown reluctance in recent years to issue new shares, as opposed to various types of bonds. And now that the technology that underpins Tesla's products has matured, is it time for a more traditional CEO to step in and help the company level-off into a stable and profitable enterprise?

Along the way, Musk drew a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission, which already had been scrutinizing the public pronouncements he's made regarding manufacturing goals and sales targets.
