Quarterfinals feature rematch of 2014 men’s final

Marin Cilic Kei Nishikori

Djokovic, who was won all 11 of the quarter-finals he has played here, beat Millman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 48 minutes on another sweltering night in Arthur Ashe Stadium. And he finished with 53 unforced errors. But Kei woke up and found his form and reeled off six straight games to take the second and go up in the third with a break.

And the heavy conditions prompted an abrupt clothing change as Millman apologized to Djokovic for having to leave the court at 2-all in the second just before the Aussie was due to serve.

Kei Nishikori has advanced to the US Open semi-finals with a grinding 2-6 6-4 7-6 (5) 4-6-6-4 win over Marin Cilic, gaining a small measure of revenge on the man who crushed his grand slam dream in the 2014 final. This is the first time in the Open Era when both the men and women semi-finals are represented by a Japanese.

Osaka had it much easier, continuing what's been a largely dominant run through the draw by winning in just 57 minutes, the third time in her five matches she didn't even have to play an hour.

After four games of the second set, the Australian approached the umpire to request an outfit change due to excessive sweating, which he said was making the court slippery and risky.

Naomi Osaka dominated Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 at the U.S. Open to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal.

Osaka celebrated her win calmly and coolly unlike the floods of tears which greeted her last-16 victory over Aryna Sabalenka.

Schiavone, 38, said she accomplished both her goals as a player, which were to win at Roland Garros and reach the top 10 in the world.

"He apologised for going to change [clothes] in the second set but I said "it's OK, I need the rest".

The 29-year-old Tsurenko, who had struggled with the heat during her three-set win Monday over Marketa Vondrousova, grabbed her legs several times during the match, but did not ask for any medical help.

Kei Nishikori needed five sets to beat Marin Cilic.

Osaka's next opponent Keys was one of four American women in the U.S. Open semifinals a year ago, when she was the runner-up. He restored parity with a break to love and, finally finding some length off his forehand wing, broke for the first time in the match and served it out after 42 minutes of ebbs and flows. Novak won just two points more than Roger and he had to dig deep in his service games to emerge as a victor before the deciding set, saving 19 out of 23 break points and stealing Federer's serve six times from 13 opportunities. I just turned off the broadcast, not gonna support that elitist bulls***. Djokovic has had his own troubles in the gruelling conditions here, but although there were moments when he again looked distressed the 31-year-old proved a more resilient opponent.

He will play either Serbia's Novak Djokovic or Australian John Millman in the last four. Djokovic has clearly dominated the head-to-head with a 14-2 winning record, with Djokovic winning their last 13 meetings.

Osaka will face either 14th-seeded Madison Keys or No. 30 Carla Suarez Navarro in the first major semi-final appearance for a Japanese woman since Kimiko Date reached the final four at Wimbledon in 1996.
