Serena Williams fined total of $17K at US Open

Serena Williams Fell To Naomi Osaka In A Tense US Open Final

Williams lost her cool during the final on Saturday, launching a tirade against umpire Carlos Ramos after getting a warning for coaching from the stands early in the second set. Venus Williams was also targeted by Ramos for that, and like her sister, she too denied it, saying, "I'm 36 years old". Entering the final, she had dropped just 28 games through six matches. "You will never, ever be on another court of mine. You are the liar", said Williams. Williams was furious and harangued Asderaki, called the umpire "a hater" and saying she was "unattractive inside".

Seemingly motivated by the violation, Williams went on a mini-run to take a 3-2 lead, but her momentum was stymied after Osaka produced a critical serve break. "I just want to say thank you for watching the match". But the Grand Slam committee ruled that what she did "did not rise to the level of a major offense" and so she didn't face the additional disciplinary action that she could have been subject to after what happened in 2009. Let's not boo any more.

Later in the match, Ramos docked Williams a point after she smashed her racket upon misplaying a shot. She embraced Osaka after taking the loss.

Williams tried to compose herself again but it wasn't enough to beat Osaka - who cruises to win her first Grand Slam championship - beating her idol.

"That's where the rule gets really tricky for the player on the court".

Naomi Osaka walked to the net, the excitement of being a Grand Slam champion mixed with a bit of sadness.

Fans were determined to see the positive, praising Williams and Osaka for their conduct in standing up for each other. The fine will come out of Williams' $1.85 million in runner-up prize money. "I don't think she looked at me so that's why she didn't even think I was".

Osaka rejected a question regarding Williams before holding up her trophy.

She received a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racket abuse.

'This is unbelievable. Every team I play here I have problems.

"I have never cheated in my life!" On Sunday, Williams was fined $17,000 US for three code violations, The Associated Press reported.

It all started when Carlos Ramos, the chair umpire, issued Williams a code violation for receiving illegal coaching from the sidelines.

It's not the first time emotional outbursts have cost Williams at the US Open. She was given a code violation by the chair umpire, which officials later said they regretted. In fact, Rafael Nadal had personally threatened Ramos in last year's French Open, telling him during a match that he would never referee one of Nadal's matches again after a disputed call.

"There's a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things", Williams said, "and because they are men, that doesn't happen".

Osaka was tearful despite having won the match and remarked she was "sorry it had to end like this".
