Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s wife dies in London

Three Times First Lady of Pakistan: Kulsoom Nawaz

Kulsoom, 68, wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, breathed her last on Tuesday at a hospital in London after a prolonged illness.

"My sister-in-law and wife of Mian Nawaz Sharif, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, has passed away". She married Sharif in April 1971.

From 1999 to 2002, she also served as the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) president after the Nawaz Sharif government was dismissed by former president Pervez Musharraf.

It is pertinent to note that deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Safdar, were convicted by an accountability court in the Avenfield reference case on July 6.

Three-time-premier Nawaz Sharif, who was removed from office in each of his elected terms, has maintained that his most recent ouster in July 2017 and subsequent conviction were part of a plot against him by the powerful military and the judiciary. Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to ten years in prison, while Maryam was imprisoned for seven years. PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif will be proceeding to London to bring Kulsoom's body to Pakistan.

Ms. Kulsoom, who was under treatment at London's Harley Street Clinic since June 2014, was placed on life support earlier on Tuesday as her health deteriorated, Geo TV reported.

PML-N leaders said her funeral will be held in Pakistan. She had the honour of serving as the first lady thrice in her lifetime.

He has directed the Pakistani High Commission in London to assist in provision of all necessary facilities to the heirs of the deceased.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was born in 1950.

She was elected from Lahore's NA-120 constituency in a by-election after her husband was disqualified from the seat by the Supreme Court past year but left for Britain even before she could start campaigning.

Referring to her mother, Maryam Nawaz had said that she had dauntlessly challenged a usurper when "most men did not".

Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Kulsoom Nawaz. They prayed eternal peace for the departed soul and commiserated with the bereaved family.
