Multiple people were stabbed at a day care in New York City

Police gather outside the private home where a day care center is located in the Queens borough of New York City on Friday, after three babies and two adults were stabbed there.

Their accused attacker was also injured from a self-inflected knife wound, police said.

The 52-year-old suspect was in police custody.

The motive in the 3:50 a.m. attack was unclear, police spokesman Lt. Thomas Antonetti said Friday.

Police said earlier that the suspect attacked two baby girls and a baby boy, leaving one of the girls in a serious condition.

Officials said the facility is not licensed, despite the employees claiming they are licensed.

Both the butcher knife and the meat cleaver were recovered by police.

The city's Buildings Department had received several complaints against the property, including the possibility that it was being illegally used as a hotel, records show.

The woman also stabbed a 31-year-old man, believed to be the father of one of the children, and a woman in her 30s at the overnight nursery, known as Mei Xin Care.

State-regulated child care programs are prohibited from caring for infants younger than than 6 weeks old unless they receive prior approval from OCFS, the statement said. Her relationship with the children wasn't immediately clear.
