Walk into my parlor: Greek spiders spin giant web over shore

A Giant Spider-Web Covers An Entire Shoreline In Aitoliko, Greece

A Greek beach has been turned into an arachnophobe's worst nightmare, as spiders have covered it in a web some 300 metres long.

The lagoon in Aitoliko, Western Greece, is now shrouded in webs, burying vegetation in a mass of spider silk, filled with mating spiders and their young.

An increase in the number of mosquitoes in the area is thought to have given rise to high numbers of the arachnids, also known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.

Residents say the extensive spider webs have another benefit: keeping down mosquitoes.

"These spiders are not risky for humans and will not cause any damage to the area's flora", she assures.

Thankfully, the webs won't be around to menace the people of Aitoliko forever, according to Maria Chatzaki, a professor of molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University in Thrace, Greece. "The spiders will have their party and will soon die". After all, these types of spiders are known to build very big nests for their mating season. Basically, when the conditions are appropriate, these spiders get a chance to overeat and mate. It was all spun by arachnids known as "stretch spiders".

"When an animal finds abundant food, high temperatures and sufficient humidity, it has the ideal conditions to be able to make large populations", she said. Plus, they probably won't stick around too long.
