White House: Ford's Lawyers Have Not Reached Agreement on Hearing

Bluff Called Grassley Gives Debra Katz & Co. One More Day

He also rejected her proposal that she testify after Kavanaugh, a position lawyers consider advantageous because it gives them a chance to rebut accusations.

The Judiciary panel's top Democrat expressed fury at Grassley's negotiating position with Ford and maintained Democrats' effort to build the battle into a larger election-year question about the treatment of women.

The order of testimonies is the opposite of what Ford, through her lawyers, has requested, according to a senior congressional source.

Kavanaugh's suggestions for questions to Clinton in 1998 included, "If Monica Lewinsky says that you inserted a cigar into her vagina while you were in the Oval Office area, would she be lying?"

That response seemed a setback to Ford supporters' efforts to corroborate her claim.

In this September 5, 2018, file photo, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, for the second day of his confirmation hearing to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. Grassley had set a 10 p.m. deadline for Katz to conclude an agreement for testimony, and vowed to hold a committee vote on Monday if a deal could not be reached.

Terms of their appearances are still being negotiated, but several details have been resolved.

Trump and his fellow Republicans initially took pains to be careful in their treatment of Kavanaugh's accuser, a psychology professor who had kept the experience a secret for decades. The person said Mr Kavanaugh would also appear.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin said in an interview on Sunday's This Week on ABC that some Republicans have said they will make their final determination on Kavanaugh based on the upcoming hearing. "I think it really speaks to her credibility at this moment". Through her lawyers she continues to refuse to testify, calling attempts to hear her side of the story under oath "bullying", and drawing out negotiations.

On Friday, President Donald Trump sought to cast doubt on Ford's allegation.

It was not immediately clear whether the Republican-run Senate Judiciary Committee would agree to more talks with Ford's team. On the same day that President George W. Bush received this request, White House Counsel C. Boyden Gray directed the FBI to investigate.

The lawyers added that they are "hopeful that we can reach agreement on details" of Ms Ford's appearance.

Vice President Mike Pence calls Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh "a man of integrity with impeccable credentials".

"You watched the fight, you watched the tactics, but here is what I want to tell you - in the very near future, Judge Kavanaugh will be on the United States Supreme Court", McConnell told the Value Voters Summit, drawing a standing ovation. With Republicans holding a 51-49 majority in the Senate, all Democrats and two Republican senators would need to oppose Kavanaugh for his nomination to fail.

Grassley made the announcement late on Friday night in the unusual form of a tweet addressed to the nominee. Judge Kavanaugh is being nominated to the highest court in our land.

"Why didn't someone call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?" the president tweeted.

The new deadline is 2:30pm Saturday.

How Kavanaugh weathers the storm-and if enough Senate Republicans stand by him-will help determine the ideological balance of the Supreme Court for a generation.

The hearing will likely push the vote to confirm Kavanaugh back to October. "I don't know when it happened, I don't know where it happened, and everybody named in regard to being there said it didn't happen".
