Iran arrests '22 people' over Ahvaz attack

Iranian Revolutionary Guards drive speedboats during a ceremony to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the downing of Iran Air flight 655 by the US navy at the port of Bandar Abbas

The video, in a tweet by the semi-official Fars news agency that was later deleted, comes as Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed Riyadh and Abu Dhabi for the attack in the city of Ahvaz on Saturday, which killed at least 24 people and wounded over 60.

When asked whether that meant Trump would be willing to sit down with Iran's ayatollah, Pompeo replied, "The president said he'll talk with anyone if we can have a constructive conversation".

"We've been very clear that they shouldn't take us on like that", he said. "I am hopeful that cooler, wiser heads will prevail", Mattis said.

The coffins, wrapped in flags, were carried by mourners.

Iran's Intelligence Minister, Mahmoud Alavi, said a network of suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack, the judiciary's news agency Mizan reported.

Islamic State is an independent, ultra-extremist Sunni Muslim movement that kills Shiites (most Iranians are Shiite) on principle, so there are no big political implications if it were IS that planned the attack.

Security forces found explosives as well as military and communication equipment at a house used by those detained for assisting the operation, according to the statement, which didn't identify the people.

Commodity traders Trafigura and Mercuria said today that Brent could rise to $90 per barrel by Christmas and pass $100 in early 2019, as markets tighten once USA sanctions against Iran are fully implemented from November. Iranian leaders blame the USA and Israel for the carnage, and vowed revenge.

"As you can see now, all of the people, whether they're Lor, Arab, Shushtari or Dezfuli, are all here today and all say death to the terrorists", he told AFP. "You will see that our response will be crushing and devastating and you will regret what you have done", Hossein Salami said in a speech before the funeral of the victims broadcast live on the state television.

The statements being made by Iran's leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on Monday, have all reinforced the idea that regardless of which group carried out the attack, the support came from further overseas.

A commodity expert has warned the deadly attack could also lead to an increase in oil prices, with relations soaring between rival states in the region.

He also criticized the United States, saying US sanctions against Iran were illegal and that President Donald Trump was using them as a tool for "personal revenge".

The attack targeted a parade in Khuzestan province commemorating the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

Iran has charged the attack was carried out by militants trained by Israel and the Gulf states, and supported by the U.S. American officials deny having played any role.

The State Department later offered a statement from spokeswoman Heather Nauert, who said that the US government was aware of the reports of an attack.

But it is unlikely the IRGC will strike any of these foes directly.

Fars later said Iranian officials identified the attackers as Hassan Darvishi, Javad Sari, Ahmad Mansouri, Foad Mansouri and Ayad Mansouri.

Two groups have claimed responsibility for the attack: the ethnic Arab antigovernment Ahvaz National Resistance and the extremist group Islamic State (IS).
