Trudeau disputes Trump's claims that Canada requested meeting with president

Trump Confirms Rejecting Trudeau's Meeting Invite: 'I Told Him 'Forget About It''

As he held a news conference at the UN U.S. President Donald Trump claimed he denied Trudeau a one-on-one meeting because of our tariffs.

Trudeau, who has repeatedly stated he would rather walk away from NAFTA than sign a bad deal, spoke before Lighthizer at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations in NY and took a more cautious tone. "That's the big one".

Although U.S. lawmakers said they expected that text to completely exclude Canada, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has made clear Ottawa could sign on later.

"I must be honest with you, we're not getting along at all with their negotiators", he said at a United Nations news conference in NY.

"I still think there is a reasonable probability of a deal this weekend", said Greg Anderson, global head of foreign exchange strategy at BMO Capital Markets.

Trudeau said existing US tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in late May would have to be scrapped before Canada felt comfortable signing a new NAFTA.

"But a good fair deal is still very possible".

He said that he will let the Mexican trade deal go through Congress as federal policy requires, but hopes it will come to legal fruition.

Trump has demanded major changes to NAFTA, which he has said caused US manufacturing jobs to move to low-wage Mexico.

Mexico and the US sealed a new trade deal after the threat of sanctions forced both sides into an agreement.

"Now, if Canada doesn't make a deal with us, we're going to make a much better deal".

Speaking to reporters at the United Nations General Assembly, President Trump said: "His tariffs are too high, and he doesn't seem to want to move and I've told him forget about it, and frankly, we're thinking about just taxing cars coming in from Canada".

That led Trudeau to suggest that Trump was trying to bully Canada June during a June meeting of the Group of 7 leading economies.

Malmstrom said Trump's comments show that "it is increasingly hard dealing with the Americans".

First, there were the comments from US national security adviser John Bolton, who suggested Monday that requests for a bilateral meeting "couldn't be accommodated".

"I don't think there's anything to read into it", Trudeau said.

"Canada wants some assurances going forward that the president will not continue to use this, after we sign an agreement, to harass our industries simply because he's mad at our prime minister", the president of the Canadian Labour Congress told BNN Bloomberg television Thursday. Another sticking point is Canada's protected dairy industry, which isn't in the current deal but where the USA wants concessions.
