North Korea says 'no way' will disarm unilaterally without trust

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho

Saturday marked just the most recent time North Korea slammed the USA over stalled denuclearization talks. The North Korean foreign minister reiterated that without simultaneous actions by Washington, Pyongyang will never unilaterally disarm first.

North Korea's foreign minister put much of the blame for the stalled momentum on USA domestic politics.

Before they turned the page on decades of public acrimony, the leaders regularly traded threats and insults as North Korea pushed to develop a nuclear missile capable of hitting the US.

The North, however, doesn't "see any corresponding response" from Washington.

Trump and Kim have said they want to work toward denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, holding an unprecedented meeting earlier this year in Singapore to discuss the idea.

However, earlier this month South Korean leader Moon Jae-in completed a high-profile, three-day visit to Pyongyang - the first by a Southern leader to the North's capital in a decade.

North Korea's foreign minister has warned that there is "no way" his country will disarm while the U.S. continues to enforce sanctions. Pyongyang demands the removal of the 28,500 USA troops stationed in the South to deter North Korean military adventurism.

"The perception that sanctions can bring us on our knees is a pipe dream of the people who are ignorant about us", he added.

He warned that if both countries continue to harbor mistrust, the summit's joint statement would suffer the same "fate of failure as all the previous agreements between the two countries".

Pompeo said some of those sanctions have been violated, including through ship-to-ship transfers of refined petroleum to North Korea and continued hiring of North Korean laborers overseas.

The minister also said sanctions against his government only deepen the mistrust.

This was decidedly so during an exchange of threats between Washington and Pyongyang that accompanied a run of increasingly powerful weapons tests a year ago that put the North on the brink of its claim to be a full-fledged nuclear power, and had some fearing war.

"Past diplomatic attempts to halt North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile development were unsuccessful", Pompeo said.

His comments come as US.

Mr Trump grumbled that commentators would cast him as "unpresidential" for describing Mr Kim in such glowing terms.

'The sanctions will stay in place until denuclearization occurs'.
