White House says not 'micromanaging' Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Kavanaugh

Senate Judiciary Committee advances Kavanaugh -- with a catch

The FBI is free to investigate any sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh that it deems credible, two White House spokeswomen said on Sunday, rebuffing suggestions the administration has tried to limit the probe.

On Thursday, Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In a stunning reversal on Friday, the Senate Judiciary Committee asked the Trump administration to order the FBI to investigate the misconduct allegations - but only after the panel sent Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate for a final vote.

Kavanaugh has called her accusations a "joke" and Judge said he "categorically" denies the allegations.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and senior adviser Kellyanne Conway denied during TV interviews Sunday that the White House is directing the process.

"The White House counsel has allowed the Senate to dictate what these terms look like and what the scope of the investigation is", she said.

Denouncing the reported restraints the Trump White House is reportedly imposing on the FBI's investigation despite the president's vow of no limitations, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.)wrote: "This is not how you conduct an investigation".

"We can confirm the FBI has reached out to interview Ms. Ramirez and she has agreed to cooperate with their investigation". It would also include, Graham added, interviews with Deborah Ramirez, who alleges Kavanaugh exposed himself to her in college, and Mark Judge, a high school friend of Kavanaugh's who Ford testified was in the room for the alleged assault. Two others, Swetnick and Debbie Ramirez, have publicly come forward to accuse Kavanaugh of other sexual misconduct.

President Donald Trump disputed earlier reports that said the White House was setting restrictions on the FBI's investigation. In her gripping testimony, Ford said Kavanaugh and Judge's laughter during the incident has stuck with her almost four decades later.

David Gomez, a former FBI counterterrorism supervisor in Seattle, said officials at FBI headquarters typically will divide up leads that get assigned to different field offices across the country for further investigation and will set a quick deadline.

Jeff Flake and Democratic Sen. They'll be doing things that we have never even thought of. "They're going to do whatever they have to do, whatever it is they do".

Trump says in a statement that the updated investigation, which comes in response to sexual misconduct allegations, "must be limited in scope" and "completed in less than one week".

King spoke Friday after the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate.

Avenatti added: "How do you conduct a legitimate, fair [and] thorough investigation into allegations unless you interview the person actually making the allegations about her experiences, what she witnessed, and what facts and other witnesses she is aware of? You see what's happening right now", Trump said.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and staunch supporter of Kavanaugh's nomination, told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" Sunday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe would include talking to Ford. Ford says he was present during her alleged assault; he has said he has no memory of the alleged attack. I haven't met her. "I'm a victim of sexual assault", she said.

Said Conway, "They both could be right - that something truly terrible happened to her in the summer of 1982 by someone, somehow, somewhere, and that Judge Kavanaugh was not involved".

Round, of Vermont, said she feels the whole episode could end up hurting Democrats more than helping them in this fall's elections, just more than a month away.

"It'd be hard for me not to support her, but I really, really, really encourage her to vote against him", Noyes said of Collins, who doesn't face re-election until 2020.
