Apple Condemns Reports of Chinese Spy Chips Hacking Its Servers

Chinese spying microchips found in Apple, Amazon computers: report

American companies design and sell leading technology products, such as servers, laptop computers and smartphones, but they are built and assembled largely in China. We also want them to know that what Bloomberg is reporting about Apple is inaccurate.

We learn a few things from this statement, namely that Apple has been already asked for comments on the spy chips, and has hinted towards an earlier, much more benign incident.

If this report is true, why would Amazon and Apple deny it?

Microchips were secretly inserted by Chinese spies in Supermicro motherboards found in the U.S. government and some of the biggest tech companies.

Tariffs "would cause broad, disproportionate economic harm to USA interests, including our companies and U.S. workers, our customers, United States consumers, and broader U.S. economic and strategic priorities", the letter read. Amazon said: "It's untrue that AWS [Amazon Web Services] knew about a supply chain compromise, an issue with malicious chips, or hardware modifications when acquiring Elemental". "At no time, past or present, have we ever found any issues relating to modified hardware or malicious chips in SuperMicro motherboards in any Elemental or Amazon systems".

Bloomberg claims that the chips were initially and independently discovered by Apple and Amazon in 2015 and that the companies reported their findings to the FBI, prompting an investigation that remains ongoing. Bloomberg quoted "three senior insiders" as saying they had also discovered the tiny chips, which Bloomberg said were much smaller than a penny and were created to transmit information back to China about the data flowing across the servers.

Super Micro, a US-based hardware company, is one of the largest server suppliers in the world, accounting for 5.1% of the worldwide server shipments made in Q3 2017. That one-time event was determined to be accidental and not a targeted attack against Apple.

However, Bloomberg claimed its reportage was based on interviews with 17 people, including six current and former senior national security officials, two people inside Amazon Web Services, and three Apple insiders.

Amazon and Apple have also denied the report from Bloomberg, both claiming they are unaware of any malicious chips planted within their servers. Apple never had any contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any other agency about such an incident.

Supermicro said it was unaware of an investigation, while USA investigators, including the FBI, declined to comment. "Multiple people familiar with the matter say investigators found that the chips had been inserted at factories run by manufacturing subcontractors in China", notes Bloomberg. Super Micro servers were removed by Apple that year, according to the report, which also asserts ties with Super Micro were severed in 2016.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the story a "gratuitous accusation" and said the safety of supply chains was an "issue of common concern".
