Pompeo optimistic Pyongyang trip will yield U.S.-North Korea progress

S. Korea Hopeful About Pompeo's Pyongyang Visit

The US State Department has said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to North Korea for further talks concerning the country's denuclearization.

The joint celebration comes after President Moon and North Korean leader Kim's third meeting last month, in which they agreed to mark the summit anniversary with "meaningful" events.

After a meeting between Pompeo and Ri on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, the State Department announced that Pompeo will travel to North Korea to discuss the second Trump-Kim summit.

"I'm optimistic that we'll come away from that with better understandings, deeper progress and a plan forward, not only for the summit between the two leaders but for us to continue the efforts to build out a pathway for denuclearisation", he said.

Jacqueline R. McAllister, assistant professor of political science, noted that while a bilateral peace agreement could be signed between North and South Korea, an agreement that effectively addresses all issues related to the Korean War would be harder to reach.

What Happened: South Korea is pushing for the United States to reach a compromise with North Korea by accepting the verified closure of the North's Yongbyon nuclear facility in exchange for officially declaring an end to the Korean War, The Washington Post reported October 3.

Nauert said the meetings in Japan, South Korea and China were meant to brief counterparts on the talks in Pyongyang.

Declaring the end of this war could help North Korea escalate its campaign for the withdrawal of American troops from the South, according to a September 17 Times article. He said there's continuing worldwide support for economic sanctions to remain on North Korea in the meantime.

Since then, North Korea has suspended missile testing and has taken some steps to dismantle facilities associated with its nuclear program, but it has not halted weapons development.

In order to build trust, North Korea, he said, appears to want "a transformation of the relationship, and the first step of that would have to be comprehensive sanctions relief".

Rep. Yoon Young-seok, a spokesman of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, said in a statement that the two Koreas should reunify under the South's free democratic system and urged North Korea's complete denuclearization. "That that can only help us to achieve our final goal".

Analysts speculated the USA and North Korea may already have reached a consensus to some extent over denuclearization methods and a declaration ending the war.

Trump said last week that a second meeting would happen "in the not too distant future" and that a date and venue would be announced soon.

"We have a very good relationship".
