Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctions, makes emergency landing

US Russian astronauts safe after emergency landing

American Nick Hague and Russian Aleksey Ovchinin were forced to return to Earth and landed in Kazakhstan when the booster stopped working during stage-one separation on their Soyuz rocket at approximately 50km (164,000ft) above the Earth.

NASA and Russian Roscosmos space agency said the astronauts were in good condition after their capsule landed about 20 kilometres east of the city of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.

With the failure of this launch, there are far-reaching consequences for the world's human space programs, and for those astronauts and cosmonauts now on board the International Space Station.

The Soyuz-FG rocket booster carrying a new crew to the International Space Station blasts off at the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on October 11, 2018. The agency said the rescue crews were preparing to return them to Moscow, and Roscosmos released still images of the two crew members receiving medical evaluation in Kazakhstan. "Search and rescue teams are en route to the landing location and we await further updates". It began a ballistic descent.

International groups of astronauts often accompany each other to the International Space Station in joint launches. Everything had been going quite smoothly for Roscosmos ahead of the freakish hole discovered in one of their Soyuz spacecraft which was (and still is) attached to the International Space Station.

Speaking with reporters in Moscow before Thursday's launch, Bridenstine said that Russian-American cooperation in space remained strong, amid an investigation into the cause of the leak. He added that a "thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted".

The failure of Soyuz MS-10 has started a domino effect which will deprive the ISS of the five crew members which were scheduled to be aboard by the end of 2018. The pair were due to join the three-person Expedition 57 crew already aboard the International Space Station.

Had the launch gone smoothly, Ovchinin and Hague would have reached the space station later today.

NASA coordinated a private event at Peabody's Coneburg Inn exclusively for Hague's extended family, sending astronaut Victor Glover to be a personal envoy to the family there.

RIA news agency, citing its own source, reported that Russian Federation had chose to suspend all manned space launches following the "Soyuz" failure.

It was not immediately clear what caused the failure.

Luckily, rescuers maintained contact and reached the downed men before helicoptering them back to safety.

"The boosters on a second-stage launching vehicle switched off", sources at the Baikonur Cosmodrome told the Interfax news agency.

The five-person crew will gather inside the Zvezda service module for a traditional crew greeting ceremony as family and mission officials on the ground offer their well-wishes.
