Jamal Khashoggi Disappearance: Saudi Arabia Warns Against Sanctions

A member of security exits the Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul Oct. 12 2018

European nations are pressuring Saudi Arabia to give a response to the missing Saudi journalist.

US President Donald Trump has threatened "severe punishment" if authorities determine Saudi Arabia was behind Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

This message had been conveyed "directly to the Saudi authorities", said the statement, signed by Britain´s foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian and Germany´s Heiko Maas.

Turkish officials say the journalist was killed and dismembered inside the consulate by a 15-member Saudi "assassination squad" and say they have evidence to support their claims.

Senators from both sides of the aisle have called for an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance, and some have suggested they would be willing to block the Saudi arms deal if more damaging details come to light.

Mr Cavusoglu has urged the kingdom to allow Turkish officials to enter the consulate.

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and columnist for The Washington Post, has gone missing since he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Otherwise, the United States risks losing credibility when it comes to human rights, he told CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday.

A member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee says the U.S. -Saudi relations may need "to be completely revised" if an investigation finds the kingdom's government responsible for the murder of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.

The kingdom also warned of retaliation if there was any punitive action against it.

Rubio, R-Fla., said during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" that if it is revealed that Saudi Arabia was involved in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, then an American response needs to "swift" and "go pretty far".

On Sunday, Riyadh restated its "total rejection of any threats or attempts to undermine it" through threats, sanctions, or political pressure. "There has been a kind of uncertainty surrounding the situation of the disappearance of Khashoggi, which has caused the market to fall", Mr. Zidan said.

The White House is brushing aside threats by Saudi Arabia that it may economically retaliate for any US punitive action imposed over the suspected murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, pledging a "swift, ..."

Nevertheless, the Saudi Stock Exchange plummeted about 7 percent at one point Sunday on fears of economic fallout from the diplomatic dispute, before recovering some of its losses later in the day.

Saudi Arabia has been pumping more oil into global markets to make up for a shortfall created by Trump's decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran.

"The kingdom also affirms that it will respond to any action with a bigger one", the source said.

On Friday, a source with links to the prince's family said Prince Khaled, who is the governor of Mecca, had been sent to Turkey in his capacity as special adviser to King Salman.

A joint statement of condemnation, if it is confirmed that Mr Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents, is also being discussed by USA and European diplomats.
