Pressure turns to Mexico as migrant caravan heads for border

Border patrol vehicle

After arriving at the tall, yellow metal fence Friday, some clambered atop it and on USA -donated military jeeps.

Men, women and children then rushed through toward the bridge, about 150 yards (137 meters) away.

This is a breaking news update.

US President Donald Trump addressed the situation on Twitter, warning he could take military action to close the US' border with Mexico to stop the flow of immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

More than 3,000 migrants are demanding they be let into Mexico, and ultimately through to the United States, with many heard chanting "We want to work!".

It was the second time in six months that Trump suggested the possibility of military action to curb immigration at the U.S. -Mexico border.

NBC reports that United States officials are now tracking that small group as they make progress towards the US.

His threats came as hundreds of members of the loosely organized caravan arrived at the Mexico-Guatemala border.

Mauro Verzzeletti, a priest who runs the Casa del Migrante shelter in the Guatemalan capital, said about 3,000 people slept there overnight and left around 4 a.m.to continue the journey, adding that "more are arriving".

Orellana says "the economy in Honduras is bad, there is nothing there".

Their week-long procession through Honduras and Guatemala had been supported by locals, who stood by the side of the road in solidarity offering food, water, money, blankets and even a pram for a baby. Busloads of Mexican federal police were gathering in Ciudad Hidalgo and a Mexican military helicopter flew along the river in anticipation.

Jonathan Guzman, who joined the mass procession caravan en route, said he dreams of finding a construction job in Los Angeles.

"That's a big step", he said at the time. Anyone with appropriate travel documents and visas will be let into Mexico, while others will be allowed to apply for refugee status.

"Just today, the Mexican government, and this is a very important step, requested the intervention of the United Nations, the Office of the High Commissioner on Refugees, to help Mexico review any asylum claims from the members of the caravan", he said.

Trump has made it clear to Mexico that he is monitoring its response.

In contrast to the earlier caravan, which moved deeper into the interior of Mexico before officials began intensive efforts to process the migrants, the Mexican government has focused on the new group right on its southern border with Guatemala.

Central American governments have dismissed Trump's threats to block U.S. aid. In April, several hundred made it to the us border near San Diego, and a limited number were allowed to apply for asylum in the U.S.

Typically, when a person manages to sneak into the United States through Mexico - regardless of whether they were from Mexico or some point farther south - they're detained and housed in the United States until their case is decided.
