Jose Mourinho accepts apology from Chelsea coach Marco Ianni for celebration

Manchester United's manager Jose Mourinho shakes hands with Chelsea's Maurizio Sarri

Jose Mourinho has revealed Mauricio Sarri's assistant Marco Ianni has apologised for goading him on the touchline when Chelsea secured a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Sarri also offered public apologies to Mourinho for the behaviour of Ianni, as he confirmed his assistant has been warned to contain his emotions.

Merson added: "If United do lose, the pressure will nearly certainly crank up again on Jose Mourinho".

"After we were 2-1 up we had positions to score the third goal, we were the best team, we were calm in control".

It is thought that Mourinho meant that Ianni was guilty of a lack of manners when he spoke about the Italian's education.

"Over the years I've always said Manchester United turn up for these big games and seem to be able to grind it out, but at the moment they let in far too many goals", Merson told Sky Sports.

"I am not annoyed with anything".

Ianni forms part of Sarri's 10-man strong backroom staff, along with club legend Gianfranco Zola, one of two assistant first-team coaches.

"But I also made mistakes in football matches and I will make more". They looked like they would snatch an undeserved win, but those of us who believed that must have forgotten that Chelsea have Maurizio Sarri now, and they are to be taken seriously at all times.

Marco who? Good question, and one that Mourinho would probably have uttered prior to this game.

"But the reaction of the fans is up to them".

Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri backed Mourinho, saying he had already reprimanded his staff member for his role in the incident.

"I didn't see what happened but I have spoken to Jose Mourinho".

"Don't do what everyone does and say 'it's Mourinho who does things.' I don't know his name, I don't need to know".

Manchester United and manager Jose Mourinho finally showed the passion that has been missing for much of this season in an explosive second half.

That caught the attention of the United bench but there was no response until seconds later when Ianni trotted in front of Mourinho again and celebrated with both fists clenched, prompting the latter to try to pursue him down the tunnel.

Mourinho has been charged by the English Football Association for abusive language after a 3-2 win over Newcastle United this month, a match which Manchester United had been losing, adding to speculation that his job was on the line.
