Saudi arrests in Khashoggi death 'a good first step'

Jamal Khashoggi at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland in 2011

The adviser, who is married to Ivanka Trump, indicated the administration is mindful of USA ties to Saudi Arabia and the ways it can help with Iran, which the Trump White House has perceived as a strong threat.

The statement, calling the journalist's death "tragic", says the two presidents had a telephone call on Sunday, without providing more details.

"We are determined to uncover every stone".

In an interview with the Washington Post, Trump said that "obviously there's been deception, and there's been lies". "We work to stabilise global markets and to facilitate global economic growth", he added. The Saudi operative, said by the Turkish source to be one of a 15-man team sent from Saudi Arabia to kill Khashoggi, was wearing the journalist's clothes and was picked up on surveillance footage at locations around Istanbul.

Earlier, Riyadh has acknowledged the death of the opposition leader in his Consulate in Istanbul, but said that it happened inadvertently.

This surveillance footage is another piece of evidence in the mysterious case of what happened to Khashoggi after he entered the consulate nearly three weeks ago. He later eats dinner with his accomplice and goes back to a hotel, where footage shows him smiling and laughing.

And yet, as the New York Times' Max Fisher noted in relation to a parallel shift happening in the United States, the killing of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has unleashed a backlash against Saudi Arabia in general - and bin Salman in particular - that neither the regime's heavy-handed domestic repression nor its acts of aggression against neighbouring Yemen and Qatar had managed to ignite.

Canada, Australia and New Zealand have condemned the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

But that was also refuted, after Saudi death squad members were seen driving a blacked out van into a Turkish forest later on the day of his disappearance.

A separate report Monday by newspaper Yeni Safak said Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, a member of Prince Mohammed's entourage seen on trips to the U.S., France and Spain this year, made the calls from the consulate. The newspaper said the four calls went to Bader al-Asaker, the head of Prince Mohammed's office. He said administration officials have their "eyes wide open".

The Prime Minister's remarks in the Commons followed former foreign secretary Boris Johnson urging a robust response to Saudi Arabia over Mr Khashoggi's death.

Saudi Arabia recently committed to investing $10 billion in South Africa.

-Oct. 22: Newly leaked surveillance footage shows a man appearing to wear Khashoggi's clothes leaving the consulate after his killing there.

The auto, which had diplomatic number plates, was found in an underground vehicle park in the Sultangazi district of the city, AFP quoted the state-run Anadolu news agency and TRT World channel as saying.

Saudi authorities would not confirm or deny the existence of the body double, but continue to insist the killing was unintentional, CNN reported.

But any direct challenge to Prince Mohammed's succession "may be destabilizing for the kingdom as a whole", said Cinzia Bianco, a London-based analyst for Gulf State Analytics.

In its latest version, the government conceded that Khashoggi was killed by mistake in its Istanbul consulate but this only sparked more calls for a complete and transparent investigation, coupled with the threat of sanctions.
