Tensions break out on migrant caravan

039;We're heading north!' Migrants nix offer to stay in Mexico

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Thursday the USA government will not open fire on a migrant caravan now heading north through Mexico, after news emerged that the Trump Administration was planning to send at least 800 troops to the southern border.

The U.N. refugee agency is urging Washington to allow people fleeing persecution and violence, including those who are traveling with the Central American caravan, to request asylum on USA territory.

The president, undeterred, has been buoyed by rising approval ratings in recent weeks and eager to cudgel his Democratic rivals on border issues, depicting the migrant caravan moving through Mexico as a menace to US security.

Police line up for a temporary blockade of a caravan of thousands of migrants from Central America, en route to the United States, making its way to San Pedro Tapanatepec from Arriaga, Mexico, on October 27, 2018. Four days after crossing into Mexico, the caravan is still more than 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) from the U.S. border. It was unclear when the details will be made public. Thousands of migrants who are part of a caravan of Central Americans trying to reach the US border took a break Sunday on their long journey toward the USA border.

"And, if the people who are fleeing persecution and violence enter Mexico, they need to be provided access to the Mexican asylum system and those entering the United States need to be provided access to the American asylum system", he said.

But when Election Day rolls around on November 6, the caravan could still be somewhere in the middle of Mexico, depending on the group's location, how fast it's been traveling and how long it's taken other groups of migrants to cross the country.

But US Attorney General Jeff Sessions says the "credible fear" asylum rule has always been exploited.

"In a group we receive help", said Ramirez, 24, referring to the food and donations provided by local communities at every stop along the way.

Mexican media reported that many caravan members rejected Mexico's plan at an assembly in the town of Arriaga, in southern Mexico, where the Central Americans camped in the central square and elsewhere.

"What we do know is that terrorists have highlighted for many years the loopholes in our border security", she said. Grupo Beta, Mexico's migrant protection agency, gave rides to stragglers and passed out water. He is considering measures that would bar migrants from crossing the border and prevent them from applying for asylum.

For the first time an arm of the federal government seemed to be directly helping the migrants advance rather than trying to diminish the caravan.

Asked whether the administration was seeking to ban certain people from entering the country or sealing the southern border completely, Nielsen said "everything is on the table".

The group crossed into Mexico a week ago, almost a week after the caravan formed in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

However, it now appears such smaller groups will be picked off by immigration authorities, keeping them from swelling the caravan's ranks. Only about 200 in that group made it to the border. But Trump has pledged that he will not allow the migrants to cross into the USA illegally, describing the situation as a national emergency.

"There are people fainting, there are wounded", said Rojas, who spoke to The Associated Press after dropping off a group of women and children in Tapanatepec, where the caravan planned to spend the night.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said that temporary identity numbers have been issued to 111 migrants under the program.

"Democrat inspired laws make it tough for us to stop people at the border", Trump tweeted on Thursday, adding that he was using the military to respond to a "National Emergency".
