Apple Announces the New MacBook Air

All-new MacBook Air takes flight

Apple announced a new model of its lightweight MacBook Air laptop on Tuesday during its event in Brooklyn.

The new MacBook Air has a design similar to existing Air but a much improved 13.3-inch screen. You also get a front-facing FaceTime HD camera with a triple microphone array and Touch ID built right into the keyboard powered by Apple's T2 Security Chip.

The new MacBook Air also comes with Touch ID for fingerprint unlocking.

Apple powers the new MacBook Air with an eighth-gen Intel Core i5 dual-core CPU clocked at 1.6-GHz base and 3.6-GHz Turbo speeds (possibly from the Amber Lake family), paired with up to 16 GB of LPDDR3 memory running at 2133 MT/s. That has left users and businesses hanging on to old machines for longer than expected, who Applehope will jump to purchase the new MacBook Air.

Two USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 ports are provided to enable connections to high-end peripherals like a 5K display.

The new MacBook Air 2018 is also 10% thinner measuring just 0.61-inches at its thickest point.

In terms of carry weight, the new MacBook Air weighs just 2.75 pounds. There are three thunderbolt ports in the new MacBook Air.

In a way, the new MacBook Air sounds like the ideal laptop ever created. We can hardly blame Apple for sticking with the knife's edge design of the original MacBook Air.

For a start, the computer has been given a space-grey finish on the outside with a body made from 100 per cent recycled aluminium. You can expect the same great battery life as the old MacBook Air, which is about 12-hours of runtime between charges.

The screen is 13.3-inches of @2x Retina display. It also feels like the keys have slightly more bounce to them when compared to the 2017 MacBook Pro and possibly even the 2018 MacBook Pro. The screen measures 13.3-inch with four times the resolution of its predecessor. We'll update the guide periodically as new information about the notebook is available. 2015 was the last time Apple upgraded the MacBook Air, and although the company has been introducing major improvements on other MacBook devices, the MacBook Air has always been neglected. The trackpad is now the new Force Touch trackpad that's 20% larger, and offers haptic feedback. MacBook batteries tend to perform very well, but we'll still need to get our hands on it to properly test that statement out for ourselves.

The MacBook Air will face competition from a number of more affordable Chromebooks, including the Samsung Chromebook Pro (which starts at $599), the Google Pixelbook (priced around $999), the Acer Chromebook 15 (around $250), and the Asus Chromebook Flip (around $400).
