Trump deploys 5,200 troops to Mexico border to stop ‘invasion’

An agent with the U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit guards the U.S. side of the border wall with Mexico in Brownsville Texas U.S

Eight hundred troops already are on their way to southern Texas, O'Shaughnessy said, and their numbers will top 5,200 by week's end.

The massive chain of migrants slowly making its way towards the USA southern border, which is still some 1,000 miles north, is now demanding that the Mexican government provide transportation for its estimated 4,000 participants - demands issued amid reports of outbreaks of violence as more groups have forced their way through Mexico's southern border.

Numerous migrants say they plan to seek asylum in the US.

"There could be incidental interaction between our military members and migrants and other personnel that may be in that area", he added, and to address that, "we are making sure our soldiers, our Marines are going to be fully trained on how to do that interaction - they are going to understand the rules for that interaction", The Hill reported.

"This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!"

"According to what they say, we are not going to be very welcome at the border", Honduran migrant Levin Guillen said when asked about Trump. The standoff at the riverbank followed a more violent confrontation that occurred on the bridge over the river Sunday night, when migrants threw rocks and used sticks against Mexico police.

The Pentagon announcement comes as President Donald Trump has been focusing on the caravan to stir up his base a week before midterm elections.

U.S. Custom and Border Protection agents take part in drills at crossing gates.

"We just want to a way to get to our final goal, which is the border", he said.

The number of people in the first migrant caravan headed toward the US has dwindled to about 4,000 from about 7,000 last week, though a second one was gaining steam and marked by violence. One of the riders died from a head injury although it is unclear how he sustained it.

More than 1,000 migrants - in a second caravan that forced its way across the river from Guatemala - have now begun arriving in the southern Mexico city of Tapachula.

Meanwhile, the Mexican government has been doing its best to get as numerous Central American migrants to stay in Mexico and apply for asylum there.

The White House has reportedly been considering a more extensive shutdown of the border, including an executive order that would ban asylum applications by those who reach the U.S.

"Sending active military forces to our southern border is not only a huge waste of taxpayer money, but an unnecessary course of action that will further terrorize and militarize our border communities", said Shaw Drake of the American Civil Liberties Union's border rights center at El Paso, Texas.

The rising tensions prompted caravan leaders to call for a rest day and institute a "security committee", the Arizona Republic reported, another sign the unrest is not limited to rare altercations. Unless Congress specifically authorizes it, military personnel can't have direct contact with civilians, including immigrants, said Scott R. Anderson of The Brookings Institution.

The projected USA deployment is already roughly the same size as the US military contingent in Iraq.

"This is inhuman. If a child had been left in the middle of that mess they would have killed them", a migrant in the group, which is estimated to number between 1,500 and 2,000, said.
