Trump tweets about a Kavanaugh accuser referred to DOJ for false claim

Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh attends his ceremonial swearing in in the East Room of the White House Oct. 08 2018

The Senate Judiciary Committee issued a report on November 3 summarizing its investigation of allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

On Friday, a woman named Judy Munro-Leighton admitted writing an anonymous letter with allegations against the conservative jurist. She said she'd never met Kavanaugh, but was against his nomination.

During his remarks in Montana, Trump dwelled extensively on Kavanaugh's confirmation - and focused on a woman whose name and accusations had not come up publicly in a hearing to explore allegations of sexual assault and misconduct made against the judge.

Grassley last month requested that the FBI investigate accuser Julie Swetnick and her attorney, Michael Avenatti, who also represents porn star Stormy Daniels in her allegations against President Trump.

The letter marks at least the fourth request Grassley has made of federal authorities to investigate those involved in the controversial Kavanaugh proceedings, which were extended due to a series of sexual assault allegations surfacing when Kavanaugh was in high school and college.

Committee investigators began investigating Ms. Munro-Leighton's allegations. Grassley of Iowa said his committee had investigated the allegations made by Judy Munro-Leighton, a woman who claimed she was the author of an anonymous handwritten letter that detailed the graphic sexual assault allegations.

Investigators found no evidence to support either woman's claims.

Said Trump: "One of his [Kavanaugh's] false accusers just came out, a little while ago, and said it's all a lie. she made up the lie".

When they finally spoke with her Thursday, she claimed she wasn't Jane Doe - but had heard about the letter and claimed to be Jane Doe so it would get more attention.

"I was angry, and I sent it out", Munro-Leighton said of her sexual assault allegation.

"In short, during the Committee's time-sensitive investigation of allegations against Judge Kavanaugh, Ms. Munro-Leighton submitted a fabricated allegation, which diverted Committee resources".

Sen. Chuck Grassley wrote in a letter to the Justice Department that Sen.

The individual, identified as Judy Munro-Leighton, has revealed "her actions were part of a ploy to take down Kavanaugh's nomination".

The report lifts the lid on the scale of the investigative effort that was triggered by 11th-hour accusations against Kavanaugh. She said she claimed to be Jane Doe so the letter would gain attention.

So this was just a stunt by some left-wing person who was frustrated Kavanaugh was going to be confirmed. It's not clear at this time if these concerns had to do with the reporting of a specific threat - again, they say its just "an abundance of caution" - but it has been reported in the past the Kavanaugh and his family have received death threats.
