New Mohamed Salah statue doesn't look like Mohamed Salah

Two evenly matched sides played out an entertaining draw

A bronze statue of Mohamed Salah unveiled yesterday at an global youth
gathering in Egypt has been criticised for its poor resemblance to the prolific Liverpool striker.

The piece was on display at the World Youth Forum in Sharm El-Sheikh on Sunday and depicts the Liverpool striker pulling off his trademark celebration - arms spread out wide at his sides.

Observers on social media said the sculpture made Salah look more like the 1970s singers Leo Sayer or Art Garfunkel, with other suggesting it looked more like the character Marv from Home Alone.

The tribute has received criticism and been compared to the bad bust of Cristiano Ronaldo, which was unveiled a year ago.

Salah enjoyed a record-breaking debut season with Liverpool scoring 32 goals to set a new record in a single campaign.

The youth forum, where the statue of Salah was unveiled, was attended by thousands, including Egypt's President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi.

She said: 'Bronze did not do it justice and I had no hand in pouring [the mold] in bronze because bronze can only be poured in specific places in Egypt and sculptors cannot do it on their own.

Emanuel Jorge da Silva Santos, who sculpted the bust, spoke of his sadness about the online criticism of his effort afterwards.

It was not clear if Mai Abdullah would be doing similar and making a different version of the Salah sculpture.
