U.S. midterms: first Muslim women elected to congress

Rashida Tlaib

Also Massachusetts, Democrat Ayanna Pressley will be the first woman of colour in her state's congressional delegation.

Tlaib's victory was no surprise.

Davids, 38, of Kansas, is an attorney by training and a former mixed martial arts fighter.

She also faced Islamophobic attacks during her campaign from some conservative media outlets.

Haaland, 57, of New Mexico, beat Janice Arnold-Jones, a Republican, and Lloyd Princeton, a Libertarian.

"Regardless of whether we win or lose, this gets to shift the narrative of what is possible", she said.

"I've never been one to stand on the sidelines". Tlaib won that race. Her parents were both born in Palestine. Tlaib won Michigan's 13th district.

Technically, Palestinian-American Rashida Harbi Tlaib is the first American Muslim woman to be elected to Congress.

Tlaib is also considered a Democratic Socialist. She could not speak English and only learnt by watching television. Following her win in 2016, Omar said her political involvement had become more than "about me or the win or the loss".

Her election comes amid a serious chasm between Trump's administration and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The United States Congress is the bicameral legislature of the Federal government of the United States.

In Ramallah and throughout the territory, Palestinians took a cautious view of the election news.

Republicans who charge that the Democratic Party has departed from its pro-Israel bona fides point to Tlaib and Omar as proof.

A hijab wearing mother of three, Ilhan is married to a Somali-American Ahmed Hirsi.

"I made a decision to run because I was one of many people I knew who really wanted to demonstrate what representative democracies are supposed to be", she said. After the start of the civil war in 1991, she and her family fled Somalia and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. First Somali-American Muslim legislator elected to office in the United States. She supports free college education, housing for all, and criminal justice reform.

Omar, 36, is a vocal advocate for single-payer health care, tighter gun restrictions and more expansive immigration policies.

Omar is one of two Muslim women elected Tuesday to the U.S. House.

Omar is running in Minnesota's strongly Democratic fifth congressional district. In her "CBS This Morning" interview, she said she hoped to bring a "unique insight" into the "lives and struggles" of refugees when she goes to Washington in January.

Omar spoke during her campaign about her opposition to President Trump's travel ban against Muslim countries.
