Trump warns House Democrats about gridlock over investigations

House Ways and Means Committee top Democrat Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts criticizes the Republican tax plan during a news conference in the Rayburn Room in November 2017

In an extraordinarily combative news conference Wednesday after voters delivered him a rebuke by giving control of the House to Democrats, President Trump went after Republicans, Democrats and the media. Republicans gained a majority in the Senate two years later and held onto it by one seat in 2016.

Joe Manchin has been the lone Senate bright spot for the Democrats so far, holding his seat in West Virginia in a tight contest. The final count is likely to leave Democrats with a narrow majority that could be hard to manage and preserve.

Pelosi, who is likely to return as House speaker despite opposition from some centrist Democrats, promised that the party will serve as a counterweight - but also work with Trump.

At her news conference, she said Democrats would seek compromise with the president, but "must stand our ground".

Washington analysts say they expect that Mueller, now that the election is over, will soon release more information from his investigation and possibly indict more figures tied to Trump's 2016 campaign. At the same time, there could be regular reports about what the committee staff has found in subpoenaed records - perhaps Trump's tax returns, his company's internal financial documents, the records of his various oligarch partners in the former Soviet Union, and e-mails and other digital messages between Trump's team and people in Russian Federation. But it wasn't clear that either party emerged with a clear mandate, save for Democrats claiming the country wants to see them conduct oversight on Mr. Trump.

In an election where literally hundreds of Republicans were elected to Congress, it is of course not true that those who showed the greatest fealty to Trump were always victorious while those who shunned him were always defeated. That's counting candidates he tweeted endorsements for or who spoke on stage at MAGA rallies with Trump. It concluded that only a message about health care and jobs could win over both groups.

And in a rare moment of practicality, the Republican leader, who is up for re-election in 2020, conceded that one of the GOP's signature efforts - the repeal of "Obamacare" - is all but dead.

But Porn said he was surprised that Democrats didn't pick up more seats in the state Legislature. On legislative prospects, Trump said he could potentially work with Democrats on issues such as taxes, infrastructure and health care, saying it "really could be a lovely, bipartisan type of situation".

The Democrats, in turn, benefited from extraordinary voter enthusiasm, robust fundraising and unusually fresh candidates.

Some Republicans sought to explain Michigan's shift to a more purple hue as nearly an inevitability after a long stint of one-party control. Nine women won governorships, tying a previous record.

Read the New York Times article here. Iowa has sent women to the Senate and governor's mansions, but never to the House of Representatives.

"The economy is what's keeping Republicans competitive despite Trump". He predicted an "invasion" from the migrant caravan making its way toward the USA and decried the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the GOP leader who will have to forge a partnership with Mrs. Pelosi, said they worked together when they were both senior members of foreign operations appropriations subcommittees in their respective chambers.

Kobach had built a national profile as an advocate of tough immigration policies and strict voter photo ID laws. Here are some of the silver linings that Trump can take from Tuesday's vote. "Too bad, sorry about that Mia".

Among governorships, Democrats netted seven, including big states such as MI and IL and Wisconsin, where incumbent Gov. Scott Walker was ousted after two terms.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of colour, young people and college graduates.

Pennsylvania was particularly daunting for Republicans after court-imposed redistricting and a rash of retirements put several seats in play. At least three other red districts flipped to blue.

He singled out GOP Representatives Mike Coffman of Colorado, Mia Love of Utah, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, Carlos Curbelo of Florida, Peter Roskam of Illinois, Erik Paulsen of Minnesota, John Faso of NY and Bob Hugin, who challenged Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey.

Alaska was one of the more intriguing elections of the year after the independent incumbent bowed out and backed Democrat Mark Begich over Republican Mike Dunleavy. The remaining 17 races were too close to project a victor Wednesday evening.
