What The Firing Of Jeff Sessions Tells Us About The Trump Administration

Late night comedians react to split Congress

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is one of 18 Democratic state attorneys general who have written to acting US Attorney General Matt Whitaker calling for him to recuse himself from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Whitaker was tapped by the White House to serve as Sessions' chief of staff in September 2017, with sources describing then-White House counsel Don McGahn as the person behind the hiring. "Matt Whitaker has a great reputation and that's what I wanted".

Lockett braved the cold Thursday night at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, where Governor Jay Inslee, King County Executive Dow Constantine, and U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal spoke.

"When you no longer have Sessions as the attorney general and you have a new attorney general, Robert Mueller has a new boss", she said into a megaphone.

Trump repeatedly emphasized that he did not know Whitaker, whom he had tapped on Wednesday to lead the Justice Department on a temporary basis after forcing Attorney General Jeff Sessions out of the job.

He also said on CNN past year that he could see a scenario in which Sessions' replacement doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt".

The headline on the op-ed: "Mueller's investigation of Trump is going too far". "It's an obstruction of justice to appoint someone who has been very vocal about his disdain for the Mueller investigation and we think that we can't stand by and let this stand".

Protesters rally to demand the USA government to protect the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 Trump campaign, outside the White House in Washington, November 8, 2018.

In the Senate, Democratic Senator Chris Coons and Republican Senator Jeff Flake said they would try to force a vote next week on legislation to protect Mueller from White House interference.

He bumped up Whitaker into the top spot over Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in a move many experts have called unconstitutional and illegal for no other apparent reason except to gain control of the Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

Pressure is mounting for acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to recuse himself in the Russian Federation investigation as special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation appears to be winding down. 'We have confidence in the Mueller investigation.

The president has sometimes said he wishes he had an attorney general who would fight for him over the Mueller probe, as he imagines former Attorney General Eric Holder would have for Obama.

"I have some very, very good people", he said.

The President's comments are at odds with the relationship Trump has forged with Whitaker in recent months, even as his opinion of Sessions continued to sour.

"Many experts view Trump's firing yesterday of Attorney Jeff Sessions as a potential obstruction of justice attempt", said organizers of the protest, including Democrats Abroad Vancouver.
