I don't want to hear Khashoggi tape

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

"Because it's a suffering tape, It's a bad tape".

Turkish and Saudi authorities say he was killed inside the consulate by a team from the kingdom after he went there to get marriage documents.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that he wants to maintain alliance with Saudi Arabia after being fully briefed on the tape of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi.

Asked whether the crown prince had lied to him when he denied having any role in the killing, Trump said: "I don't know".

The latest reports on an Egyptian woman claiming she is an ex-wife of Saudi murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi have been stirring a debate among Saudis and social media users.

The president added that he knew "everything that went on in the tape without having to hear it" before calling Khashoggi's death "very violent, very vicious and awful".

This has been a recurring aspect of USA treatment of the recording, with all top officials seemingly going out of their way not to hear it so they don't have to speak to its contents publicly.

The Trump administration on Thursday imposed penalties on 17 individuals over their alleged roles in the killing of Khashoggi.

He also said it "takes two to tango" to resolve the conflict in Yemen, where Iranian-backed insurgents are facing off against Saudi-backed forces, noting that "I want Saudi to stop, but I want Iran to stop also".

His office later said that so far as Saudi Arabia was concerned, the highest-level suspect was former deputy intelligence chief Ahmad al Assiri - and that the crown prince had no knowledge of the killing.

Saudi Arabia has denied any such linkage. "And I have no intention of working with him ever again", he said on NBC's "Meet the Press". "I think the evidence is overwhelming that the crown prince was involved", adding: "We need to punish who ordered this - who's in charge".

Saudi has offered conflicting accounts of what happened to Khashoggi before finally admitting that he was killed in a brawl after the officials tried to return him to the kingdom.

"There remain numerous unanswered questions with respect to the murder of Mr. Khashoggi", she added.

Speaking at a panel as part of an global conference in Halifax, Canada, Akar said Khashoggi's killers may have taken the journalist's body parts out of Turkey in luggage.

Included in the U.S. intelligence analyzed by the CIA was a phone call the prince's brother Khalid bin Salman made to Khashoggi, encouraging the journalist to make the trip to the consulate to get the documents, according to the Post.

The Washington Post, which broke the story, said the Central Intelligence Agency found that 15 Saudi agents flew on government aircraft to Istanbul and assassinated Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate.

Saudi Arabia has put forward a number of contradictory reports regarding Khashoggi's murder, at first claiming that the journalist left the consulate building alive.
