YouTube now offering free streaming of movies

Users will be able to watch a limited number of titles for free on YouTube

"Can we do ad-supported movies, free to the user?"

This represents a more modern and lax approach to video streaming and honestly makes a lot of sense.

YouTube reportedly plans to grow the Free to Watch section as time goes on.

There are over 100 films but most are quite obscure.

However, the new addition includes titles including "Rocky", "Terminator", "Zookeeper", "Agent Cody Banks", and "Legally Blonde", among others, TechCrunch reported. In typical YouTube fashion there was no real fanfare about the appearance of these films, they were just suddenly there. YouTube has you covered, albeit with some ads. You can see the selection of movies and television shows that YouTube has available in their dedicated section right here.

A look at the new "free to watch" section of YouTube Movies & Shows. Several other ad-supported video streaming services like Roku's The Roku Channel and Walmart's streaming service Vudu, as well as Tubi, are already offering its own free, ad-supported movies.

YouTube says that it started the ad-supported movies due to demand from viewers and that it saw the ad spots as an opportunity for advertisers.

As AdAge reports, YouTube chose to introduce free, ad-supported movie streams because it's what users want, with Rohit Dhawan, director of product management at YouTube, stating "We saw this opportunity based on user demand, beyond just offering paid movies".
