United States service members killed in Afghanistan blast

Car bombing rocks Afghan capital

The US did not immediately release additional details about the attack, the deadliest against US service members in Afghanistan since six were killed in a motorcycle bomb explosion in December 2015.

An initial review showed the soldier was "likely accidentally shot by our Afghan partner force", a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation statement said Tuesday, adding that the "tragic" incident occurred as they engaged in a battle with al Qaeda militants.

G4S, one of the world's biggest security groups, is one of a number of foreign security contractors operating in Afghanistan and provides guards for the area around the British embassy.

Interior Ministry deputy spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said casualties were "not known".

The deaths are the latest in a growing toll on US forces in Afghanistan following the death of an army Ranger following an operation against al Qaeda militants in Nimruz province on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a rash of American combat deaths in Afghanistan is putting a spotlight on a stalemated 17-year war that is testing President Donald Trump's commitment to pursuing peace with the Taliban.

"Early interviews indicate the tragic accident occurred when the partnered force became engaged in a close-quarter battle during an assault on one of multiple barricaded al Qaida shooters", the statement noted.

The Taliban carry out near-daily attacks on Afghan forces, and in August the insurgents overran parts of Ghazni, leading to days of intense fighting before they were driven out.

Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the attack in the city of Ghazni, where US forces have waged fierce battles against the Taliban for months.

The Taliban routinely reports on its operations in Ghazni on its official propaganda website. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The two-day summit in Geneva is billed as a platform for the Afghan government to renew its commitment to reform and discuss aid contributions in its bid to achieve stability and security.

The situation in Ghazni has deteriorated to the point that the province was unable to participate in this month's provincial elections.
