President Trump Picks Former ‘Fox and Friends’ Host for UN Ambassador

State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert speaks during a briefing at the State Department

Because of her work at the State Department, Nauert would have the advantage of already knowing the Trump administration's position on all major global issues.

By selecting State Department spokeswoman and former Fox News anchor Heather Nauert as his next United Nations ambassador, President Donald Trump has further consolidated his control of America's foreign policy.

Trump describes Nauert to reporters as "very talented" and "very smart".

When Haley announced her impending resignation in early October, Trump praised the accomplishments the former North Carolina governor had racked up.

Nauert, 48, previously worked as a host at both Fox News and ABC News before joining the State Department, where she has worked very close under Secretary Mike Pompeo on the road. If Ms Nauert is confirmed by the Senate, she would be a leading administration voice on Trump's foreign policy.

The president picked Nauert after considering other potential nominees including former White House aide Dina Powell, ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft, former U.S. Senate candidate John James of MI and ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell - who was a favorite of National Security Adviser John Bolton. "If confirmed, I look forward to continuing the outstanding job Ambassador Haley has done representing your administration and the American people".

Nauert's confirmation could hinge on her performance at the hearing.

CNN further reports that some top administration officials want to "downgrade" the United Nations ambassadorship from a Cabinet position.

And it's obviously not for nothing that she was nominated for an Emmy Award during her years in journalism, for authoring the special series 13 Around the World.

Nauert did not bring with her the depth of foreign policy experience of some of her predecessors, many of whom were veteran Foreign Service officers who spent their careers immersed in the intricacies of diplomacy and foreign affairs.

Trump's announcement comes just a day after the USA lost a high-profile vote in the U.N. General Assembly for a resolution condemning the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Plucked from Fox to be the State Department's public face, Nauert catapulted into the upper echelons of the agency's hierarchy when Rex Tillerson was sacked in March and replaced with Mike Pompeo.

"I want to confirm that Bill Barr, one of the most respected jurists in the country, highly respected lawyer, former attorney general under the Bush administration, a terrific man, a terrific person, a brilliant man", Trump said as he departed the White House.

"Now in terms of formulating policy, I suspect that she is not going to play the role that Nikki Haley did as ambassador to the United Nations", Schaefer said.
