Michael Cohen Should Get 'Substantial Prison Term,' US Attorney Says

U.S. President Trump delivers remarks as he hosts a Hanukkah reception at the White House in Washington

Court filings Friday from prosecutors in NY and special counsel Robert Mueller laid out why Michael Cohen, U.S. President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, and Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, deserve prison time. They said his sentence should reflect a "modest" reduction from the four to five years they said federal guidelines would suggest.

The Special Counsel referred his investigation of Michael Cohen in part to the Southern District of NY.

Mueller said that discussions about the potential Moscow development were relevant to the investigation because they occurred "at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the US presidential election".

Trump also has focused his criticism specifically on Cohen, calling him a liar who is making up stories to convince the government to ease his sentence in the New York City crimes to which he's also pleaded guilty.

Due to his help, Mueller declined to recommend additional jail time for Cohen for lying to Congress. The defendant also provided information about attempts by other Russian nationals to reach the campaign.

"With respect to both payments, Cohen acted with the intent to influence the 2016 presidential election".

Despite such specific allegations of Trump's actions, the president quickly tweeted after news of the filings: "Totally clears the President".

Prosecutors, who said Flynn's assistance was "substantial" and merited no prison time, disclosed that he had cooperated not only with the Russian Federation investigation but also with at least one other undisclosed criminal probe.

He explained that the Manafort filing reveals the former Trump campaign chairman is not cooperating in the investigation, and the Cohen memo doesn't reveal anything new about hush money payments to women who allegedly had sexual encounters with Trump.

The filing says the meeting never happened.

John Dean was reacting to the memo released by federal prosecutors into the case involving Trump's ex-attorney Michael Cohen.

Manafort, who has pleaded guilty to several counts, violated his plea agreement by then telling "multiple discernible lies" to prosecutors, they said.

Cohen continued to provide "relevant and truthful information" to assist the probe, holding seven sessions with investigators, "many of them lengthy, and continues to make himself available to investigators", it said.

Cohen wanted to obscure from Congress and the public that if the project had been completed, Trump's company "could have received hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources in licensing fees and other revenues", prosecutors wrote. The Manhattan prosecutors' charges against Cohen stemmed from a referral from Mueller's team. But the NY prosecutors were unsparing in their descriptions of his conduct, saying he was motivated by "personal greed" and that he "repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends".

"These legal documents outline serious and criminal wrongdoing, including felony violations of campaign finance laws at the direction of President Trump", Senator Diane Feinstein said in a statement.
