Pelosi says House committee likely to ask for Trump tax returns

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence took part in a heated exchange with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer at the White House

Pelosi also addressed criticisms that the president once said Mexico would pay for the border wall and is now asking for the government to cough up $5 billion.

"If we don't get what we want, one way or the other, whether it's through you, through military, through anything you want to call, I will shut down the government", Mr Trump said.

On Tuesday, Trump sparred with Pelosi and Schumer over border security in a televised shouting match in the Oval Office. There's some speculation that maybe the image of Pelosi standing up to Trump helped her a bit in those negotiations.

But the meeting soon turned contentious as Mrs Pelosi and Mr Schumer argued that the Republican-controlled Congress could pass legislation before funding for some agencies was set to expire on 21 December.

Wednesday's accord gives Pelosi a clear path to becoming the most powerful Democrat in government and a leading role in confronting President Donald Trump during the upcoming 2020 presidential and congressional campaigns.

"We're doing this in a very friendly manner", Trump said, as Vice President Mike Pence sat beside him, silent and stony-faced.

"This proposal, which was developed by members who care about the institution of the House of Representatives, would provide that members in senior leadership positions can serve three terms with an additional term with two-thirds support of the caucus", wrote Pelosi in a Wednesday statement.

The key sticking point is how much money Congress should allocate for the President's long-promised wall at the US-Mexico border.

For the past two years, Pelosi has repeatedly said she had initially meant to retire after the 2016 elections but chose to stay on and continue leading House Democrats after Trump's upset victory.

CNN anchors Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon chuckled together about "NanChuck" taking on Trump over the wall.

Bickering in front of the cameras, he hit back: "If we don't get what we want, one way or the other - whether it's through you, through a military, through anything you want to call - I will shut down the government".

The administration official said, "Additionally, activities that are supported by multi-year funding, such as FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund, will continue operations", referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "They will have their path as we go forward".

Ms Pelosi later said: "This has spiraled downwards".

Moments after she released her statement, seven rebellious Democrats said they would now back her.

"Today, Nancy Pelosi acquitted herself in a way that should put to rest any argument about whether she's up to that task", he said, alongside a chyron reading "Like a Boss" and a picture of Pelosi smiling in a pair of sunglasses. "I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck".

"See, we get along", Trump said.
