Two Israelis killed in West Bank shooting: army

Baby born prematurely after West Bank shooting dies

A Palestinian gunman got out of a vehicle and opened fire at a bus stop outside a West Bank settlement on Thursday, killing two Israeli soldiers before speeding away, the Israeli military said.

A knife-wielding man has attacked policemen in the Old City, the walled historical centre of Jerusalem, popular with tourists, but usually uncrowded at night, according to local media reports.

The Israeli military has also confirmed that another Palestinian was killed during an arrest attempt in the city of Nablus.

The morning attack, which followed days of violence in the West Bank, took place at a stop near a settlement where a Palestinian man stepped out of his auto and opened fire on soldiers and civilians, the Israeli army said.

Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said on Thursday the military was sending "a few more infantry battalions" to conduct operations in the West Bank.

In the stabbing attack on two Israeli police officers overnight in the Old City of Jerusalem, the attacker was shot and killed.

They said he was behind a drive-by shooting in the West Bank on Sunday that left seven Israelis wounded.

The Shin Bet security service said in a statement that a suspect named as Salah Omar Barghouti, 29, who tried to evade capture during a raid on a West Bank village was shot and killed. Two others were wounded, one of them critically, while the attacker fled the scene.

A 21-year-old Border Policeman was lightly hurt and was taken to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in the capital.

"The climate created by the policy of repeated intrusions into the cities, the provocations against the sovereignty of the president and the lack of a horizon for peace are what led to this" flare-up, Abbas said.

Israeli forces at the scene of the ramming attack responded with gunfire.

Speaking from West Jerusalem, Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett said the events in the past 24 hours have been "very bloody - one that the occupied West Bank hasn't seen for a good deal of time". It said forces were searching the area for the attacker.

Israel accuses Naalweh of shooting to death two Israelis and wounding another at an attack in a West Bank industrial zone in October. A hunt for the suspect is under way.

"The flame of resistance in the West Bank will remain alive until the Israeli occupation is defeated from the entirety of our land, and we regain our full rights", Hamas said.

Two Israeli police officers were stabbed in Jerusalem and neutralised the attacker with return fire, the law enforcement agency's press service said.

Shortly after Barghouti's death, Hamas claimed credit for the deadly Ofra attack, affirming the killed assailant was a member of the group.

Wafa identified the slain Palestinian as Majd Jamal Mteir, from Qalandiya refugee camp in the central West Bank.
