The Philippines’ Catriona Gray Wins Miss Universe 2018

TOPSHOT- Catriona Gray of the Philippines speaks while host Steve Harvey listens during the interview of top three finalists of the 2018 Miss Universe Pageant in Bangkok

In the final question round, Gray was asked about the most important lesson she has learnt in life and how would she apply it in her time as Miss Universe.

The 24-year-old singer and model said she wore red because "when I was 13, my mom said she had a dream that I would win Miss Universe in a red dress".

"At that time I thought nothing of it, and today my mother's dream came true", Gray wrote in a post following her win."Philippines what an fantastic honor it has been to carry your name across my chest and to embody you in all aspects".

Hosted by Emmy Award-winning Steve Harvey, the show in Bangkok on Sunday saw Gray taking an ecstatic first walk as Miss Universe in a dazzling red gown with a thigh-high slit.

Gray said during the pageant that working in a Manila slum had taught her to find beauty in hard situations.

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said: "We join the whole country in greeting the new Ms. Universe Catriona Grey a hearty Congratulations!" She is famous for walking in slow motion, a trick that has been nicknamed the "lava walk".

Gray is reportedly named after her paternal grandmother, Catherine Gray, an immigrant to Western Australia from Scotland in 1952.

Catriona added: "I'm for it being used for medical use, but not so for recreational use". And that's where we drew inspiration from.

The Philippines previously won Miss Universe titles in 2015, 1973 and 1969. But as early as now, she's managed to unite Filipinos and will always be their queen - crown or no crown.

In 2015, Harvey made a big error in front of a global television audience at the Miss Universe pageant, when he misread his cue card and announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez as the victor.

"I am a creative person".

So that was our best pick to win the Miss Universe 2018 crown. Even if you don't understand what the lyric is, there's something everyone can relate to.

"You all thought that was amusing", he said. "There were moments of doubt where I felt overwhelmed and I felt the pressure".

"With the eyes of the world and the entire Filipino nation on you, you chose to highlight your work with the poor, and to send a much-needed message of hope to all". She also serves as an HIV/AIDS advocate at Love Yourself PH, an organisation that provides HIV testing, education, and prevention.
