Syrian regime 'confronts' Israeli missiles near Damascus

Syrian air defense respond to suspected Israeli attack

Syrian air defences intercepted "hostile targets" near the capital Damascus, Syrian state media said on Tuesday.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the Israeli airstrikes targeted three positions south of Damascus that serve as arms depots for Hezbollah and Iranian forces.

Meanwhile, Lebanese reports said Israeli warplanes infiltrated the Lebanese airspace on Tuesday evening at the time of the attack.

"The aggression originated from above the Lebanese territories and a number of hostile targets were downed", Syrian TV said.

The suspected Israeli attacks come two days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the U.S. withdrawal of some 2,000 troops from northeast Syria would not change Israel's policy of targeting Iranian forces in Syria.

Almost an hour after the attacks began, Damascus residents could still hear the air defense units firing toward targets in the air.

Three Syrian soldiers were injured during an Israeli missile assault on an ammunition depot, SANA reported, citing a military source.

Israel has previously carried out several bombings in Syria against what it says are Iranian military targets and advanced arms deliveries to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese group, both enemies of the Jewish state.

"An IDF aerial defense system activated in response to an anti-aircraft missile launched from Syria", the Israeli military said on Twitter.

Earlier, the Al Hadath TV channel reported that the strike was performed by Israeli planes and targeted Iranian military facilities and warehouses in southern and western suburbs of Damascus. Tuesday's attack is the first since a missile assault on the southern outskirts of Damascus on November 29. That followed the September 17 downing of a Russian reconnaissance plane by Syrian forces responding to an Israeli air strike, a friendly fire incident that stoked regional tensions.
