Rubio Meekly Objects To Way White House Has 'Handled' Shutdown

Trump threatens to shut down border as government funding stalemate drags

He claimed he will be "forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with".

In the evening, Trump left the White House for a short ride to Vice President Mike Pence's residence to join him, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner for a private dinner.

In a burst of early morning tweets, the president said the alternative to funding his controversial wall project would be total separation from Mexico, including making USA vehicle companies pull out their factories based on the other side of the frontier.

Trump, who scrapped plans to spend Christmas in his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and stayed in Washington due to the shutdown, had now also canceled his New Year's plans, Mulvaney said.

But Trump is now blaming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat expected to again become speaker next week.

In another tweet, Trump claimed the USA loses more than $75 billion a year from trading with Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement and argued that closing the border would be a "profit making operation".

The House and Senate adjourned Thursday after brief pro forma sessions and made plans to reconvene Monday, signaling that the partial shutdown will last through the new year. He alleged Democrats are not dealing because Pelosi is waiting until she secures the speakership.

The US president has been struggling with US Senate Democrats to pass a budget bill containing $5 billion in funding for the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico for the last month.

Pelosi has all but locked up the support she needs to win the gavel on January 3 and there is also no sign of daylight between her and Schumer in the negotiations over government funding.

"'She can not be seen by her party as being weak on negotiating with Donald Trump", Mulvaney said.

He said Pelosi will soon face a vote on becoming House Speaker and she does not want to be seen as caving to Trump's demands. Thirty-five percent of those questioned said they backed cash going towards the spending bill for the wall, while only 25 percent said they supported Trump in the partial shutdown over the matter.

Trump, meanwhile, has been hardening his rhetoric and on Saturday said that Democrats have given the Republicans none of the votes they need in the Senate to provide for border security.

Trump visited San Diego in March to review border wall prototypes commissioned by the Department of Homeland Security, but he has not visited a Border Patrol station or USA port of entry.

"The Democrats, believe it or not, don't call that a wall", he said. Congressional Democrats have rejected that figure and in recent weeks have refused to publicly endorse a figure above $1.3 billion, which continues existing funding levels and includes money for new border fencing and levee walls, but not the concrete wall Trump once demanded before he started more recently talking about "steel slats".

"We are not giving up on that - it's why the government is closed, ' Mulvaney said".
