United States congress opens with Democrats taking House

Palestinian-American congresswoman on Trump: We will 'impeach this motherf---er'

WASHINGTON'S new era of divided government began on Thursday as Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives, aiming to serve as a check on US President Donald Trump's disruptive presidency at least until the 2020 election.

Collins, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, also indicated support for an element of the Democrats' approach. "Two months ago, the American people spoke and demanded a new dawn".

Speaking from the White House briefing room for his first time ever on Thursday, Mr Trump congratulated Ms Pelosi, saying: "It's a very, very great achievement and hopefully we're going to work together".

House Democrats, led by new Speaker Nancy Pelosi, say they won't allow any money.

House Democrats muscled through legislation Thursday night to fund the government but not Trump's proposed wall.

The House passed two measures that would re-open government agencies whose funding had lapsed, but provide no money for a border wall demanded by Donald Trump.

The new Congress is like none other.

"Without a wall you cannot have border security", the president continued after allowing the officers to make statements to the press. It was approved, 239-192.

Tlaib is seen as one of a group of progressive new lawmakers elected to Congress. Then they swiftly turned to the shutdown.

Pelosi said in a clip airing on MSNBC on Wednesday that she's willing to give "nothing for the wall", while Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the upper chamber won't consider any bills without the president's support. That ensured the shutdown would continue, clouding the first days of the new session. But the Republicans think this is "political theatre". She is picking up right where she left off.

Ahead of the final vote, Pelosi deployed her deal-making abilities to win over detractors, and by mid-December, she appeared to have secured the votes necessary to prevail after negotiating an agreement with some of the Democrats who had been lobbying to block her from the speakership. She will be the first to regain the gavel since legendary Sam Rayburn of Texas in 1955. "My vote against these Pelosi rules is a vote FOR Utah". She promised to end discrimination against LGBTQ Americans, address gun violence and climate change. "It's not who we are as a nation", Pelosi said.

Republicans face their own internal battles beyond just the conservative House Freedom Caucus, but as they decide how closely to tie their political fortunes to Trump. House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy's name was put into nomination for speaker by his party's caucus chair, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the daughter of the former vice president.

"Go, kids! Go, kids!" the California Democrat said.

Democrats won the majority of the House in the November mid-term elections, and the new representatives were sworn in on Thursday.

It was a quiet afternoon at the White House toward the end of a four-day week.

The Democratic Party plans to introduce a bill called "For the People Act" Friday. Visitor galleries included crooner Tony Bennett and rock legend Mickey Hart, both guests of Pelosi.

Congress overturned a two century-long ban on hats so that Minnesota's Ilhan Omar could wear her hijab on the House floor. "#unapologeticallyMe", she wrote on Twitter. If the shutdown stretches on for another week ― looking more likely by the day ― it will be the longest government shutdown in history, over a $5 billion dispute in a $4.4 trillion budget.
